I have tried my hardest to stay away from fondant but with my next cake I can't. I'm making a 3 tiered graduation cake for my son (kindergarten) and want to make scroll to place on the side of the cake. I bought a box of Wilton fondant for the scroll. I want the ends of the scroll to be curled.
I have NEVER worked with fondant!!
My plan is to roll it out curl under both ends and maybe set it on something curved so the "paper" will not be straight. Does fondant dry hard?? How long does it take to dry?? Also I want to write the names of each child on the "scroll". Can I use BC or royal icing? Am I going about this the correct way????
Thanks for your help!!!
Michele
To get the fondant to dry hard, you will probably need to knead in a small amount of gum-tex. I have tried just drying the fondant for days without the gum-tex and it is still a bit soft and pliable. The gum-tex makes it dry a lot harder. You can get gum-tex in the same area of the store where you got the Wilton fondant.
Oops!!!I just realized the scroll you are mentioning.I was visualizing a scroll shaped like an S or something like that. That happens when you read jus at a glance, LOL.
I'd use gumpaste or fondant/gumpaste mix(half of each). After cutting the rectangle(scroll) , roll (curl) the ends using cotton or wax paper roll to help hold the shape.
Yes, you could write over the scroll using non-toxic markers.
I did this cake a couple of years ago. I think I kneaded some tylose powder into the fondant to give it strength. But you probably could use just straight plain fondant if you don't have tylose. Gumpaste would work as well and would dry really hard. I just rolled it out, put the edible image on it and curled the corners a bit over a big round plastic dowel. Let it set for a day or two.
