How can I make the fondant (Satin Ice) harder so I can make figures? If I use it alone, the figure kind of disfigures, the pieces won't stay in place. Should I make the pieces of a body, separately and then stick them together?

Have you tried adding gum-tex to your fondant. It stiffens it up a bit and makes it harden faster.

You can add gumpaste in a 50% proportion. Half fondant and half gumpaste.Try using a small amount first.
About how to join the pieces of the figures i think that depends on what you are doing.Hope some experienced CC addict can help you more.

I've tried gumpaste but anyways I get this "melting" down effect. And it gets kind of cracked. I will try gumtex. Any more tips or tricks in sculping figurines????

I made some animal figurines (in my gallery) using Wilton Fondant. The first one I put the head on right away and it kind of look smushed (the dark brown bear). After that, I let the figurines sit for a day or two before I put the head on. I put a toothpick in the bottom part of the figure and then let it dry. I've also started using modeling clay that you can bake (the unicorn in my daughter's birthday cake was made this way). It hardens and the person the cake is for can then keep it forever. My daughter loved the unicorn.

Something else I learned when doing fondant figures - if you are putting them on buttercream iced cake put a separator plate between the figures and the icing because they will start melting and getting sticky after a while.

I've done a lot of figurines (see my photos) and found that the best way to keep them from getting smooshed is to add the gumpaste. It dries much faster with the gumpaste. I do wait a little while to put the heads on and I also sometimes reshape just a little as they dry. But, it worked SO much better than just fondant.

I have looked at Karen's ducks and other animals....they are soooo cute! My question is...since I've never used MMF or sculpted any thing before...how do I get started? How do you attach the heads, arms, etc.? I've been decorating cake for a long, long time but because of CC I REALLY want to expand my horizons and try sculpting and using MMF!!! What a great website! icon_biggrin.gif

You can also add Gum Tex to your fondant as well... a powder that helps harden the fondant...as for starting out egarman...I taught myself as I went along and have learned one valuable lesson....let things dry..If I make a figurine I make the body first and letdry overnight with toothpicks or dry spaghetti sticking out of the top a little bit for the head to go on....let the head dry seperately...a trick also is to form a damn with cornstarch to help your stuff dry in a round way as opposed to having a flat surface...i hope this makes sense...just have fun with the fondant and play with it...if you wreck it ball it up and try again....always keep your unused fondant covered...I have been working with fondant specifically for figurines for about a year but I am rather new to this foorum so I only have a few cakes posted....hope this helps....Stacey

you can add gumpaste powder to the fondant, too -instead of already made gumpaste. Just knead in some powder when kneading the fondant and things dry much faster.

The best way to get started is to look for instructions for polymer clay figurines. There are loads of books and you'll start to see how all characters are really just broken down into simple shapes. It takes some practice, but it's not as hard as it looks.
My flock of little duckies were super easy. It was just an oval, a ball and then little triangles.

I just buy premade fondant or I will use gumpaste(sugarpaste) as well...you can add gumtex to fondant to help dry faster as well...but I have found allowing yourself time for drying that fondant works great...hope this helps...Stacey

Does anyone know if there are any internet sites with good directions on making figures? I want to make a froggy...I might just wing it. I just got comfy being inside and putting the baby down for a nap. It's 90 degrees here today which is crazy for us this time of year!!!
