Hey all. I made a gumpaste sombrero. I dusted the outside of a Pyrex bowl with cornstarch and then placed the gumpaste on top to dry. The outside is nice and hard but it appears to be sticking to the bowl. I tried placing it in a closed oven with the oven light on but that doesn't appear to be helping. The next time I do this, I'll cover the bowl with plastic wrap but what do I do now??? I tried prying the edges up a bit and the gumpaste started cracking. icon_surprised.gif(

Please help!!

Unfortunately, that sort of made things worse. The gumpaste got stickier after it came out of the freezer. icon_surprised.gif( I've read that putting vodka on it helps but I don't have any. I do have tequila...maybe I'll try that!

I'm sorry, I don't have any suggestions for you on how to get it out without cracking it. I just started working a little with gumpaste and it sure does seem to crack easily in general.

I just tried making a cross for a communion cake using a cookie cutter on some rolled out gumpaste and I used some crisco on my work surface first. Once the top of the cross was dry enough, I flipped it over onto a clean plate and then let the bottom dry. Because I had used some crisco I was able to pick it up rather easily off the original work surface without it sticking.

I know that doesn't help you now icon_sad.gif , but if you can't salvage the sombrero and have to redo it, maybe the crisco would work.

I hope someone else comes up with a better idea...

I had to pry the sombrero off the bowl. It wound up being too tall anyway so I just cut off the cracked part with a pair of scissors. No harm no foul.

I would REALLY recommend using saran wrap if you ever attempt this, though.
