You can make a rolling pin out of PVC pipe...way cheaper. I just used my household rolling pin. Worked great. I did my final cake with BC icing and fondant roses. For the most part I bought 2 boxes of wilton fondant and had some left over. You will need maybe a box and a half. I also choose to get a fondant smoother. It works great on fondant and to help smooth the BC icing with Viva. Try Walmart. There wilton fondant was the cheapest and so was there other items. I did get a small rolling pin for like $3, for the small projects.

I'm about to start Course 3 tonight...and I am NOT buying the wilton rolling pin. I'm just gonna take a regular rolling pin that i found for a dollar. Its worked for my MMF so I will use it for the wilton fondant as well. I'm not too happy about buying that either. Oh well, I still love the classes...Good Luck to you!!
My instructor for course 3 let us make our own fondant and we didn't need to buy the rolling pin we could use our own, which I did. We had to buy the kit for course 3 but other than that my instructor let us use whatever we wanted. I used rolled buttercream on my final cake.
Besides the kit all I bought was One box of wilton fondant for our present cake. We didnt' have to but our teacher recommended using it once so we had a good idea of what texture the fondant is suppose to be. Then for the rest of our stuff we could use a homemade version or different brand if we wanted too.
Also, any non-stick rolling pin will work. i have a marble one that I lightly grease and it works great, Another person found a silicone one at walmart for under 10 dollars, that one worked great for her too.
Also, the one box of fondant i bought was enough to practice flowers, decorate my present cake and I still have more left over. We however we able to make smaller cakes instead of what the course book calls for.
Good luck

My Wilton teacher didn't make us use the fondant on the last cake if we didn't want to. We did use it on the present cake. I used my regular wooden rolling pin and just used crisco on it. Other than buying the course 3 kit and one box of fondant, that was my added expenses for the class.
I'm starting Course III on Monday. I was just thinking the other day that this class is starting to add up!! Luckily I'm planning my Michael's purchases and should have enough coupons to cover some dammage!!
I know that insturctors "suggest" things, but honestly, they don't hold a gun to your head and make you buy things like Wilton's rolling pin or fondant. I think you can be resourceful and still learn all the methods. The rolling pin is $35???!!!! Wow.
Good luck with your classes. I can't wait, myself!! I have been through cake class withrdrawl because we had to wait a month for this class to start!

My course III cake was buttercream also. I think the instructors are very lenient about what you use and how you choose to decorate ~ they are teraching the methods - it is up to you to be creative!
I do recommend for those who have never worked with fondant to use the Wilton fondant for your first experience - that way you know what it is supposed to feel like and how it works.
the course can be as reasonable or as expensive as you want to make it - just improvise on the items you need to have.
It is a lot of fun!
LOL. Our instructor was pretty impressionable as well. About half the class came to the second class with the 101 piece kit and the cupcake plastic holder thing that converts into a cake holder, along with an assortment of other supplies that managed to clear out the isle.
We had 14 people in our first Course. It was kind of crazy. I am DYING to see this rolling pin!!

Wow!! Wilton must really love her!! No really, I understand b/c instructors work for wilton that they can soft sell products which is no big deal. Some of their stuff is really great. But it's kind of interesting to see how some people just eat it right up!! ![]()
We all did the same when I took the course III, used our own rolling pins, our instructor told us to just keep it lightly dusted with powdered sugar or cornstarch. I did my final cake in buttercream also, except for the roses, and those were from the one box of fondant I got to do the present cake in, what was left over which was plenty! Besides buying your course III kit you really shouldn't have to buy anything else extra for the class ![]()
I just used my wooden rolling pin that I already had. I did not use the wilton fondant. I purchased it elsewhere as the wilton stuff is nasty. A lot of people in the class made their fondant from the recipe on the wilton site and it tasted much better than the wilton boxed fondant. I did purchase the course III kit but I used the 40% off coupon from Michaels. I agree with LinB that the fondant smoother is a good item to have. I also use it with the viva paper towel to smooth my buttercream and it works great. Good luck on your class!
