I want to make a cherry cake... can I make a good red fonadnt that is going to taste okay at least or should I just cough up the dough and buy red satin ice??
I am just starting to make cakes for "friends" and I am only charging her $25 dollars for two 6" cakes to look like a couple of cherries. I really want the practice but I also want to cover my costs! ![]()
If I am going to buy it I found a 2 lb bucket for 10.99 is that a good price?
I have made it with the Ameri-colour. It is great...you don't have to add alot of colour with that stuff...I would just mix yourself...Probably cheaper!
depends how much you think your time is worth to stand there and mix the red in - it isn't going to be quick - BUY IT!!
For a mostly red cake, I'd definitely say BUY it. You have to add so much of it, and you get red coloring on your hands, your clothes, your counter, the floor (uh...
), and it can still turn out looking pink. Buy it and save yourself the time and headache and red fingers.
For accent pieces, I'd mix it myself...but if you're mixing it, make sure you do it a day or two in advance so it can sit and deepen in color to a true red.
I made red yesterday with Americolor, and it wasn't too bad at all. The red was off my hands by morning, and I didn't notice a huge affect on the taste. But really, very few people eat fondant anyway in my experience, so I can't see that it would be worth the cost of purchasing pre-colored for one cake unless it was super-important for it to be perfect and risk-free.
It took me two tries but I made red mmf. I found the trick to be to reduce the amount of other liquids in it (like the water). I used americolor super red. Here is the pic of LM

10.99 is a GREAT price as far as I'm concerned. Of course, I BUY all my fondant because I don't use it that much ('round these parts they just don't like it). Seriously, the first fondant (other than Wilton) that I'd heard of was Satin Ice. My cake supplier ordered red and purple for me because I was doing the "Red Hat" thing at the time. I ended up doing 2 big hat cakes and a red pilates ball from the red. I had the purple FOREVER.
