I have seen some pretty basetweave cakes on this site. My basketbasket weave cakes are not as perfect I am having problems getting the weave to be uniform. I have the basic down but need a little help on getting the weave to be straight and uniform my weaves are a little crookie and uneven I also need ideas on making the handles and the lids for the basketcakes. Thanks guys for any input given

I find if you have the cake at eye level it's much easier to get everything straight and uniform. I have a cake a couple of basketweaves in my photos if you'd like to take a look. Sorry I don't know about making handles.

I agree the cake is better at eye level to do the basketweave. I also have a few pictures with basketweave you can see. Also I make sure that the line I am working on going up is in front of me so always turn the turntable so it is right in front. Hope this helps and makes sense. As with everything practice makes perfect. You will get it. Good Luck.

I spent 4 hours yesterday trying basketweave on an 8" 4-layer round cake. Just couldn't get it right!
I've decided that the consistency of my frosting may have played a part in the disaster. It started off good, but when the frosting in my pastry bag warmed from body heat and the frosting got too soft, it changed the appearance. So, I think the next time I'll just do a couple of rows at a time. Maybe, patience is the answer.

Sorry, I can't be more help.

I have done a basket with handle and lid, the handle was done with royal icing and the lid was half a cake circle covered with icing. As for the basketweave I agree eye level help also steady your bag with your other hand as you draw the lines.

Marking the cake before starting the basketweave is really important. I make sure that I have it marked in the proper places on the top and the bottom of the cake all the way around before even starting the basketweave. Then eye level and steady hand. Take a break every couple of strips or so to give your wrist a rest. and PRACTICE!!

When I do basketweave I put the cake at eye level and use my metal spatula to mark a line all the way down my cake.

I don't have a very good camera so I can't show you pictures of my basketweave yet. But I can tell tell you what works for me. One is to not have your icing too thin. This makes everyting sort of blend together and your lines are not defined very well. I start my strokes at the bottom which I'm not sure is right as far as technique but it helps me see where I'm going better. One last thing would be how close together you put your lines. I tend to put mine closer together so that it can be more uniform. I don't do well with them spaced a ways apart. But practice and do what works for you. And it's just icing so don't let yourself get worked up when it doesn't look as well as we think it should. We are hardest on ourselves so just do your best and keep practicing.

Definately have the cake at eye level. It made a huge difference when I tried doing basketweave. When I had it on my table, I couldn't get it right, but as soon as I lifted it up to eye level, it came out much better looking!
