I have a full sheet cake due in June that I would really like to be covered in fondant. Do any of you have any tips or suggestions how I can cover a large cake like this more easily?
TIA
Nikki
The only thing that comes to mind is to make sure not to roll the fondant too thin. When I'm doing a bigger cake, I usually try to roll it out a bit thicker than I usually would. Hope this helps! ![]()
Oh ya, some people use a cake board to help them lift the fondant onto the cake when it is a bigger one (I have never tried it, so I can't say if it helps or not - sorry)
Good Luck!
When I've had something large to cover in fondant, I ask my DH for help. I get the fondant rolled out to the right size, then gently lift one end onto his hands then put my hands under the other end and we lift together. I like to roll my fondant fairly thick (about 1 - 1.5 cm). I find I can get a smoother finish if it is relatively thick. Using a fondant smoother on it does wonders, too!
Is this the sort of info you were looking for??
Could you make to 1/2 sheets, cover them in fondant then put them together to make the full sheet? Cover the seam with a pretty fondant or buttercream deco of flowers to braid or whatever goes with the theme.
It just seems like it would be a lot easier and neater looking if you could do this in two cakes instead of one large.
thanks, and yes that was what I was wondering. My design has a sun type design in the middle of the cake with the wire spray in the very center.(version of a Lindy Smith cake). This I think would cover most of the seams, if I do 2 half sheets, but I'm just putting a gold ribbon around the sides.
Thanks again for the info. I will definatley give it a try and see what happens.
