hi, im going to attempt my first whimsey cake for this weekend. i've never really worked w/fondant except for my wilton class. so for my first try im going to do a two tier. 9 inch, and 6 inch w/buttercream frosting that i picked up from this site and some fondant accents. My questions are ..
do i still crumb the cake even when using bc? if so, do i crumb the color im doing the cake?
also, when pasting the fondant accents, do i let it dry a bit/chil before adding them? and is vanilla or tap water best to glue them onto bc?
what type of support do i need? just one dowl rod thru the middle?
sorry for all the questions, i didnt expect to make this cake so soon.
thnx in advance.
I've not done a Whimsey cake, but here are some answers to your questions. I crumb coat everything, but if you are completely covering with fondant, all you need is one layer of buttercream underneath to help it stick to the cake. I think water works fine for sticking your fondant cut outs to the cake. If they are fairly large, I would let them dry a little so they hold their shape when you stick them to the cake.
As far as doweling. You need one in the middle andd several around the perimeter. You may want to check out the article on this site that gives instructions for making a Whimsey cake. I think it should be very helpful.
I hope this information is helpful to you and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Cindy
I'm covering it all w/buttercream, but just adding fondant accents like stripes, circles, etc. I did read the whimsey article, it was helpful, but i still had questions since im doing it in bc.
so you still crumb coat it even if you cover your cakes in bc? i can try that, it doesnt hurt.
thank you for your helpful tips.
