Every year my family gets together near the beach and celebrates everyones whose birthday is in the summer. It's much cheaper and easier than celebrating with 12 different parties and allows us to see the people who come in from Mexico/Arizona/Hawaii to be there.

So, this year I am pushing them to let me make the cake. It is normally sheet cake with chocolate plaques with names on them. I want to do it bigger and wow them.

I need ideas that are whimsical and outlandish. Our family is a really funny bunch of folks. The ages are from 50-ish for the oldest, to the unborn one due a couple days after the party. There are several 2/3 yr olds (one being my daughter) and mine! (Making my own bday cake???)

Anyways, the only idea I have is a large dome (my husband thinks a sphere) shaped cake with satellites to form a sun.

Thanks in advance!

Since you getting together near the beach can you make a whimsical beach cake. That would have the wow factor you want and be big enough to feed everyone there.

Why don't you make a teired cake and make something fondant representing each birthday person's interest with their name.

I am thinking, 12 people, young to old --

Clock with edible images and name written, youngest at 12-1, rotating around to the oldest at 11-12. Hands at the time the party starts.

Oh, I LOVE the clock idea!!! I love the beach theme, too, though. Is there a way you could tie it together...like a grandfather clock draped in fishing net with starfish, seashells, etc, on the fishing net and around the base?

Sounds cool. Would definitely need to make it funny, though. Like a funny face on the clock or ? I was thinking a small cake for each birthday person, plus a larger cake for everyone else, but one cake would be easier! Please keep the ideas coming! I would definitely like to incorporate a summer-y theme into it. icon_smile.gif

Oh! I forgot, half the family is really nautical! Very into boats --they are part of the yacht club, own boats, and my husband's parents own a boat supply shipping company! Perhaps incorporate that?

How many people is this for, anyway? If you are feeding lots of people, you can bake a couple of large (18-20") round cakes. Cut 4" curves from the outside, cut cake strips to look like the hub and spokes, cover all in fondant. Then make 12 handles from gumpaste.

Voila! A huge steering wheel like is on a tall ship!

Sorry, guys. Thanks for all your replies. I talked to my MIL, and she wants to do a cupcake activity this year instead of cake.
