Alright here's the summary of my problem---
I'm doing a grooms cake for a friend of mine for next Sunday (29th) as a gift. I'm going to do probably 2 tiers with a catchers mitt out of fondant on the top with tuxedo strawberries flowing out of it and down the cake.... sound ok? He used to play Navy division ball with DH and DH was pitcher and he was the catcher... anyway...
I wanted the fondant glove to be about the size of a youth baseball glove and my question is----how long in advance should I sculpt it so that it is dry enough to pose on Sunday? I was going to sculpt it either tonight or tomorrow and set it over a mason jar to dry but should I add a fan blowing on it or something? Should I do a 50/50 blend of gumpaste and fondant or just try to do it out of gumpaste or what... I need it to be pliable for around 30min to 1 hr so that I can cut/sculpt it so I'm afraid if I use too much gumpaste it will harden before I'm done with it...kwim?
So pretty much I'm asking... have I screwed myself in drying time?!?
Thanks in advance--you ladies always have the answer!!
I would just use fondant and then you will have plenty of time to work with it. If the cake is not due until next weekend you have plenty of time for it to try and harden.
I have no advice, but I can't wait to see the finished product![]()
You absolutely have time. And I agree, I would use fondant as well.
I wouldn't make that glove out of just fondant. It will not dry through to the center, and if the glove gets warm, the moisture will have no place to go, and the glove will crack. This will also happen if there is an air bubble inside it.
Make the glove out of rice krispie treats first, then cover it first with royal icing, to fill in the bumps, allow to dry for two days, then cover with fondant.
