After looking at everyone's creations of figurines, i would love to try it. but how does one create the figure to look just like it? is there a mold to use, or is it all freehand. for example this cake i found which i love....

I've seen other figurines made like fairies, animals, chicken little, etc.
Also, attaching fondant to buttercream. do you use vanilla to paste it?
thnx
I have used molds and also shaped them free hand. Can't say I have a preference. It really just depends are how creative you are. Molds work better when you are wanting to get lots of detail but it is just as easy to mold somethings by hand. Toothpicks work well to anchor also if it's againt the cake or something just put a dallop of royal icing where it will be touching the cake. Just make sure that you give everything time to dry and set. I have learned my lesson recently trying to move a bow or something before it has completely set.
Good luck!
I have done figurines on most of my cakes (in my album) and I have done them by hand, no molds. Any websites or books that are good for Polymer Clay are good sources to look for ideas for Fondant figurines. I haven't had any trouble with them, nor have I used toothpicks. I just use a little water and it makes a seal between the cake covering fondant and the figurine.
