I want to try my first MMF covered cake with MMF decorations but I have a few questions. When do I add color to the fondant, during mixing or do I paint it on? If it is added while mixing, does it hold color the same as buttercream icing? I'd really appreciate the help!
By the way, I'm making the baby shower cake with the buttons and clothelines from the Wilton 2006 book. If anyone has made this cake and has any suggestions...I'd appreciate it!
I read in another post on the site that you can either knead color into it after you've made it (hard to do if you need alot of fondant in one color) or during the melting process. When you're melting the marshmellows, add coloring until you gat the color you are wanting the finished product to be. Adding sugar to the mixture will not change it's color.
It isn't hard to add the color after you have mixed it. If the fondant seems a little bit hard and the color isn't mixing in well then stick it in the microwave for a little while (about ten to fifteen seconds for a small ball of fondant) and then carefully need in the color. It does get really hot, so don't burn yourself mixing it! Let it cool a little bit.

I made the cake that you are talking about. I cut out all of the clothes and made the buttons ahead of time, because it really is time consuming. That helped when it was actually time to put the cake together. You can look at my photos if you want. I did a different fondant baby from the top. I made the clothes basket the day before.
