What does "crumb coat" mean?

I think I know....but not sure.

It's a thin layer of icing that's put on the cake and allowed to set up before the final coat is applied. It keeps the crumbs in place so you don't have to worry about them as you ice.

Woo hoooo I was right! LOL

It's so funny, because I kept seeing that term on here this past week. And I couldn't figure out what it was.

So, as I'm icing this cake last night, the first one in TEN years that I've done, I notice all those little crumbs in the frosting and was so upset. Then "crumb coat" just popped into my head.

Makes things a lot easier, that's for sure.

Crumb coating is great! It kept my first cake that I made (this weekend) from having crumbs in it!
