I've been asked to showcase a cake at a local shop in my town during a city-wide event so there will be alot of traffic going through the downtown shops and los of eyes on my cake. The shop owner is helping me get my name out there and is so fabulous by helping me do free advertising like that!!!

I live in a small town where anything outside of a basic sheetcake with a border and writing on it is not heard of. So I really want to set an impression with a tiered cake. Here's the problem...should I do a more elegant and sophisticated cake or a fun and funky whimsical one? I'm really torn!! Help!!

Since it sounds like most of the business is sheet cakes and more basic cake I wouls stick to something more traditional like a nice teired/ stacked cake with ribbon border. If you can make a smaller funky cake to display if there is room etc. The main focus should be on what people are more likely to buy from you.

Agree with the above. I come from small town(s) so I know how they think. Plus the #1 rule in sales is "know your target market". Know who you're selling to and what they will buy. I detest those sales pitches that try to tell me what I'm "supposed" to like, instead of trying to sell me something that I DO like.

I compare it to the show "Trading Spaces" where they want to give the homeowner something "different" and it's so far off from the style of the homeowner that it's nuts. There's nothing wrong with "different". I'd like to have something "different" ..... but make it something different that fits my taste!

Sounds like a fabulous opportunity for exposure for you! Be sure to post the pics and let us know the feedback you get!
