I am making my first doll cake using the wonder mold pan. I had a question about the top part of dress do you recommend fondant to cover the doll's upper torso or is buttercream OK? I'm not covering the skirt in fondant so I hoped that buttercream is also ok for the the doll? Does the buttercream slide off or does it stay? I plan to make it a couple days ahead. I need your opinions and advice so that I make it right the first time. Thanks so much!

I made the cake several years ago using all buttercream. I ended up using my finger to smooth the upper part of the dress to mold it to the doll...that is after I stuck it in the freezer to firm up first.

Buttercream works just fine on the top. I've never had it slide off before. I've used a star tip to do the top before and I've also used a round tip to fill in a design, let it crust a bit, and then went back and smoothed it out. Then I've added tiny flowers, bows, or ribbons. I'd say you'd be fine using buttercream! We want to see it when you're done too!!

By the way, did you do the pretty little pink teapot you have as your avatar?? SO sweet!!
Good luck with your first doll cake!

Thanks schmoop and ellyrae that was fast replies! I am off to bed but will look tomorrow for more tips! I am glad that the buttercream does stick to the doll and for the tips to smooth it out afterwards if I want. I will definitely post the photo here and if I remember to PM you to remind you to see it. icon_smile.gif

Yes i made that teapot. thanks for the compliments. It was the 2nd one I ever made and so now I'm "the expert" and not nervous to make them. I have been doing cakes for 13 years but whenever I have to make one I never made before I get nervous but then when I finish the cake I take a deep breath. After I make it I think how easy it was and why did I worry so much? I am doing a stacked communion cake, a soldier themed cake and a doll cake for the first time for next weekend cake orders!

Have a great night and I will be checking out the board tomorrow (and the next and the next, icon_smile.gif)

I have always used buttercream for the top of the doll. I have never had issues with it sliding off. icon_smile.gif

I used buttercream on mine with no problems. I just piped it on. On thing you might want to do is clip up the hair until the icing crusts! I also piped on icing bracelets and a necklace, my daughter loved it.
