I am working on a single layer tiered cake and my bottom layer (12") in splitting. A 8" & 6" will go on top. I am wondering if I need to bake another layer or could I possibly doctor it up. My concern is will it be strong enough to support the other layers. What do you think?

If it's properly doweled, the dowels will support the weight of the upper layers, in which case it would probably be OK.

When in doubt......don't! I think I would re-bake since it's stacked. If the cracks are minor, no big deal, but if it's actually splitting/falling apart, I'd start over. What caused the split? Carrying without support, or baking? If baking, put a cup of hot water on the lower rack to help with this problem. Let us know how it goes.

To be on the safe side I would make another one if you have time especially if this cake is going to support frosting and two more cakes do you put pudding in you cake mix are use a pound cake recipe those cakes are stronger and hold up will for a tier cake I always make my cakes a couple of days ahead so they have time to cool and set.
Good Luck I have my fingers crossed for ya!

Thanks for the advice. Because of time constaints I used the dowel rods and the cake did fine. I uploaded a picture under bridal shower cakes. I am so happy that I found this site!
