I'm doing a cake for my neice's wedding in a few weeks and she has voiced interest in a monogram on the cake, either as a topper (crystal) or written on a plaque on the side.

I would like to verify the placement of the initials. I've heard that the Bride's first initial is fist in a small size, next their married last name initial a little larger in the middle, and last the groom's first name initial.

In this case it's a little weird because the bride's first initial is "I" and the groom's first and last initial is "L".

"I" and "L" look similar in the pretty script fonts and I'm afraid it will all look like a bunch of illegible squiggles.

She like the dainty and romantic looking letters.

Does anyone have any advice on this?

I'm kind of in the dark.

I have no advice to offer but I'm interested too. That's quite an interesting situation.

I did a wedding last summer where their initials were pMs!! icon_lol.gif

Unless, they think it is humourous.....I would avoid monograms like that. Or else make them in such an elaborate script that you can barely read them!

Hi! I am a sign designer and work with fonts alot. There are many scripts....but really, the size of the center initial will save you here. Just make it considerably larger and you will be fine. Monograms like this are rule breakers. You have no control over what the letters are, and the viewers know this, as does your neice! Lean on the size difference!

Just did a monogrammed wedding cake.

The Groom's last name is the Large Middle Initial.

The groom's first name's initial is smaller and on the right side

The Bride's first name's initial is smaller and on the left.

I used chocolate molds to form my fondant monagrams. I have checked my molds, and although the I and L are similar, when one is actually made in the larger size, it distinguishes it from the L.

HI All!

YOu are correct, the brides initial if first on the left and then the large center one is the last name and the groom is on the right. I Have to agree with the person who commented on the fonts, it is all in the middle initial. That will be the saving grace. Research some fonts on line, or if you have access to looking to some of the wilton pattern books, they usually always have some alphabets in them. That is ususally where I have found most of mine.

Good luck
Dawn

Thanks. Phoov's advice on the larger center initial makes a lot of sense.

I didn't think about the Wilton books - I have a number of them.

I'm going to put these ideas into practice and see what I can come up with. As usual - you guys are terrific.
