OK, so I'm coming to the pros. I called in response to an ad in the newspaper for a decorator, talked to the owner and told her I had no actual training but I had a portfolio of cakes and have been decorating at home for about a year. I really just want to learn, I don't care if I get paid that much because it would be a second job anyway. She seems interested. Any tips for the interview? Oh, I have to decorate a cake on site!!! Should I take my own tools??
Thanks for your help!!
Sara
You should always care about getting paid a fair wage for working, regardless of your skill level! I think it's good to realize that the wage will be lower than for someone with more experience, but your willingness to learn shows that you are in it for more than a paycheck. That could be a plus, but don't allow yourself to be taken advantage of either.
Be honest about what you can and can't do if asked specifically. When I look at someone's portfolio, I always ask how long a certain cake took them to decorate. Don't say 2 hours if it took 6.
As far as tools go, I would call and ask if you should come prepared with your own tools. My assumption is that they will prefer you to use the business tools on site.
Listen attentively to what the employer is looking for and what the job entails. Most of all, just relax and do what you do! Good luck!
Also when working on the cake make sure you have everything that you might need next to you. Stoping to find something like a towel or another bag, will hurt your timing on decorating the cake. Learned that one first hand. I was told that it showed lack of prepareness on my part. Got the job but not the salary they were going to give me. Live and Learn. But don't sweat it. If you have done any cakes you know the basics. Good luck on the job.
Thanks so much for advice. They are definately things that I didn't think about. Wish me luck!
