A Stack Of Photo Boxes...

may seem like an unusual cake, but the manager of the Michaels where I work is leaving, and I'm making his cake. I was thinking of doing a stack of photoboxes (they are a little bigger than a shoebox, if you haven't seen them) and I was wondering if it would be easier to make individual, fondant-covered boxes and stack them, or make a large single cake and cut rectangles of fondant to look like the sides and tops of the boxes and apply them directly to the side of the cake. They don't have to be life sized. The reason I'm doing the boxes is that he has a reputation (well-earned) of making large stack-outs of products that more often than not, topple over at some point. Luckily, it's usually him that knocks them over. (If I could figure out how to make something that looked like a large pile of broken glass, it would be even more accurate LOL!) We love him though, and are sorry to see him leave.
Any thoughts? The stacks of boxes in the store are usually piled like bricks, in rows and columns.
You could do a bunch a smaller photo boxes in a pile, like indivdual cakes.... that way it would look like they just fell down.
Thanks for your replies.
I've never done a topsy-turvy cake before. I am still a little intimidated to try that, but it would certainly be apt! Some of the stack outs around the store certainly fit that description...
I was thinking more along the lines of the "pile" of small cakes. I think that's what I'll probably do. I've seen other shoebox cakes and they are wonderful, so I hope that they are not too difficult to do.
Luckily I have most of Sunday - the party is at 7 pm.
If anyone else has any other ideas, please post! Or, if you have any tips about making boxes, please feel free. ![]()
