Feeling Bad For My Son - No Chocolate Help?!
Lounge By Katskakes Updated 26 Apr 2007 , 5:25am by Aimeestrange
Hi everyone,
not sure where to post this, thought this would be the right spot.
My son is 8 yrs old, he is allergic to peanuts. so we have to cut all chocolate candies. I have been making a ton of things with chocolate candy melts, and he's always asking what about me?!
now these treats are not for home, they are for family, work or to be sold.
I have tried doing gummy from wilton, no good.
Is there anything else out there that i can do for him besides cakes? he's not into the sugar cookies decorated.
any suggestions? thoughts? help?
My daughter goes thru the same thing but she has no allergies. When she sees me making anything, she asks "I don't suppose those are for us are they?"
So, like you, I'm always making something for other people, and like your son, my daughter can't have it because it's for other people.
I wouldnt' dwell on he can't have them due to allergies .... he can't have them because they are for other people.
Well sometimes i do make things for home. or my other son gets to eat the left overs. That part is kinda unfair to him.
I have made cakeballs, but he can't have them covered.
so he's had them plain. Lately i've been doing tons of covered oreos. he loves oreos... but i can't cover them with chocolate. I just wish there was some other type product i could use to cover his treats with.
like the fruit loops idea! thanks.
I never get to end up dipping cake balls into chocolate. I put a bit of flavoring into whatever it is that I'm gooshing them together with, and that's it. They go into the freezer and the kids consider them "free game". They aren't around long enough to be dipped.
I wouldn't worry about it. Every kid gets the "what about me" droops when a cake is headed out the door.
Have you looked for an alternative peanut-free chocolate? I don't know if one exists, but what with the big caution on peanut allergies lately you'd think someone has created something?
nutfreecandy.com has premade treats as well as chocolate bars and chips for baking
thanks! i really appreciate the help in finding something.
i would still be worried about this. nothing at home has peanuts. but does that mean that where they come from there's not nuts or peanut butter around?! i'm scared to tried, it's not worth my son's life.
I completely understand and am in no way asking you to risk your son's life. The site I read says they have a daughter with a nut allergy and were looking for alternatives, much like you. They take precautions on their machinery not even to mix machines that have flour and/or wheat, because nuts aren't the only allergy they're cautious of. I am also in no way vouching for them, I just found the site looking for nut-free chocolate for you.
Hope it all works out okay.
Monica
i know!! i'm sorry if it came wrong from my part. i just read about their daughter too. I'm sure their facility is good and clean from nuts, but my concern is where the chocolate is coming from. you know?! like i said before i really do appreciate the help for finding something for me!
Maybe i just been putting a lot of thought into it. but i'm thinking if they are doing it from a nut-free place, my home is nut free too. i can use candy melts to make his treats if that's the case.
again thank you
ok.. im still reading everything on this site and i found something that does answer my question.
1. How Do You Insure Everything You Make Is Peanut and Tree Nut Free?
We purchase all of our raw ingredients and packaging only from suppliers who give us a written guarantee they do not use peanuts, tree nuts, or nut products and manufacture in a nut free environment. We then make everything in our own nut free facility using dedicated equipment and individual packaging to keep them 100% safe.
also to answer a question asked, i'm looking for other things i can use. not necessarily chocolates. thanks!
great. I hope it all works out for you and your son, whatever your choice. You, of course, gotta do whats best for you and him. I also found a couple other sites while looking, so perhaps some research is in order and they have other treats you can use.
Take care and God Bless,
Monica
I thought that Nestle or someone made safe to share chocolates and treats that are guarenteed nut free. Also I saw Quaker now has certified nut free granola bars
In my house I get the same question from my BF =) And sometimes I want something sweet too. However neither of us really cares of chocolate (please don't shoot me)
I almost always have everything on hand for rice krispies. And they don't take me very long to make so this is typically the answer. I have also decorated them with buttercream and fondant and get great reviews from doing this.
As for those scraps of cake you have. How about layering them with pudding for a nice little treat? He can even make the pudding to help!
I will keep you in mind and see if I come up with anything else I do.
My friend's son is allergic to peanuts. Anaphalatic allergic- the worst there is ..he gets a trace, a smell and he dies without an epi-pen which is constantly with him.
They buy special chocolate from an aussie supplier that makes nutfree ones and gets it from them in writing or by speaking to the ceo directly to be absolutely sure.
So, it is possible for him to have chocolate, just make sure it's from a specific place that deals with allergies.
Have you tried Carob? You can get it at any health food store and a lot of people use it as a chocolate substitute. And I dont think it really tastes that bad. Hope this helps!
