My handwriting stinks and I'm doing a cake with a Bible with scripture written on it? What would be the best way to do this?
I know I've seen posts on this topic but I just can't find them right now. I'm thinking about the piping gel transfer but I don't know how to do it.
Also, I thought of the candy melts transfer but I don't know how to do it either.
I use the letter presses. There are sets where you can create your own words. If you are putting a large verse on there, I'm not sure these presses will be small enough...
Here they are ... http://www.wilton.com/store/site/department.cfm?id=3E305037-475A-BAC0-57F35B6A79A8B318
You can print out the message with your word processor and then place a wax paper over the printout and then trace the message with the melted candy melts. Once the candy melts have hardened, just slowly peel the wax paper away from the candy melts message.
If you want to do the transfers, print the verse out in reverse (or mirror image) on your printer in the size and font you want. Put a piece of wax paper over it and make sure they are both flat and not going to move from each other. Then, use the piping gel and trace the backward image. Then when you put it down on the cake, it will be the right direction. With the candy melts, I'm sure you have to wait until they harden, but I've not done those. HTH
Forgot to add that after you put the wax paper with the piping gel on your cake, you'll have to rub (lightly) over the transfer to make sure it transfers.
indydebi ~ I have those letter presses but am wanting a different font. Thanks!
Wendoger & archanac ~ Do you just use melted candy melts or do you have to add anything to it? Also, how do I adhere them to the cake? Thanks!
kbrown99 & Ali24 ~ Once I transfer the gel to the cake do I pipe over it with more piping gel or can I use buttercream over the piping gel? Also, do I immediately transfer it or do I wait a while? Thanks!

I would actually use piping gel colored the shade you want and then you shouldn't have to go over it with anything else. I would also put it down on the cake immediately so that it will transfer. At least, that's what has worked for me. HTH
Oh, also, if you do have to go over it again once it's transferred, I would probably use the piping gel rather than buttercream just because I think it would end up smoothing into the transfer. I think the buttercream would end up sitting on top of the transfer and not be smooth. JMO
I use royal icing (tracing) on parchment paper. Candy melts are pretty much the same way.
I use the SugarVeil system. Check out my cakes. If you don't want to get the system, you can order the special icing and pipe it with a bag. You can use the same technique as with royal icing--select a font you like, print out words you need, lay paper under a piece of lightly greased vinyl or waxed paper (vinyl is easier to see through), and pipe icing over letters. The SugarVeil icing remains flexible for quite a while so it's easier to put on the cakes. You'll need to let it dry enough so that it can be picked up without losing its shape. I love it for lettering.

Unless you're wanting to change the color of the candy melts (in which case you'll want to add an oil based color), then you do not have to add anything to the candy melts. If you apply the letterings after you just frosted the cake then it'll stick by itself. You can always use royal icing as a "glue" to be safe.
I have really bad handwriting!
What me and my mom do is we use the piping gel clear and trace on a wax paper, transfer it to the cake, and then go over it with buttercream. You have to be looking at the cake the right way to see it but then it doesn't show up. We also do that same technique with characters and stuff. That way you have the outline right on the cake and you can pipe right in it!
Hope you find what you need here!
Ya dont have to add anything to the candy melts...just melt them and pour them into a piping bag. If you want the letters to be 3-D, then pipe a stem onto the bottom so you can stick it into the cake....if ya want them to lay flat, then ya really dont have to do anything...just lay them onto the cake.![]()
(this is what has worked for me)
You all have certainly provided so much great information! Also, check out that SugarVeil system karensue mentioned. http://www.sugarveil.com/confectionery_icing/techniques.htm Wow!
Thanks ![]()
Well, I got the cake done. I used the piping gel technique since I was running short on time.
I'm a procrastinator. I'll post the pics later today.
THANKS EVERYONE!
Sorry ~ I'm 2 days late. What a weekend
.

I ended up going over the piping gel with buttercream because the gel didn't totally transfer. By the time I decided to do the gel my BC had crusted over. Maybe that makes a difference on how well it transfers. It was hard to hold the transfer still while applying/rubbing it on the side of the cake. I had premeasured and cut the paper to the right height so I wouldn't have to hold it and then I changed my mind and decided to put it a little higher
. I'll plan better next time. ![]()
Thank you all for all your help. I'm going to try all the techniques (eventually
) and see what works best for me. ![]()
Wendoger ~ it wasn't hard at all. ![]()
