How To Fill-In Areas With Icing And Smooth

After transferring a pattern to a cake, how do you fill-in the areas with your choice of color and make it perfectly smooth. I did a 1/2 sheet cake for DH's work (he works for the Postal Service) and transferred a pattern of a postage stamp on the cake, then used the smooth side of the basketweave tip to fill in the areas. I used a flat, soft paintbrush to try and smooth out the filled in areas, but maybe I didn't let it crust over long enough. It wasn't very smooth at all and I don't want to make this mistake again. This is my first time to try and fill-in a pattern on a cake. I'd appreciate any advice and help.

You can dip your finger in cornstarch and lightly tap it to smooth it some, but be careful not to get too much cornstarch because it will look powdery.
