Hey All,

This is the Solar System Cake I came up with for my 3rd grade son's class after finishing studying the solar system. It isn't quite what I had in mind. I had never worked with MMF so big (16 inch cake) took not quite 2 batches, it craked horribly once on although on this cake I could probly get away with it some, I would be mortified with this on about any other cake, and havnt run into this with other MMF cakes. I cheated and used gumballs for the planets, earth is MMF but not embellished much, I tried some luster dust but didnt get the effect I wanted. There is a band of asteroids between planet 4&5 made of cand rocks crushed some. What would you do to jazz this up?? I feel like it needs something. Due tomorrow morning.

Thanx guys. Heather

I like it just the way it is.....simple, but it has everything the class has just studied. For stars: what about the edible gold flakes? or dots of piping gel with lustre dust mixed in....

I have one question though: isn't it Wednesday still?? Why are the posts here dated Thursday April 27th??? Or is it the Twilight Zone time? icon_confused.gif

If you have time..cut them from some fondant (gasp) or gumpaste..let em dry a bit then paint..or just paint them right on there..or do you have any silver dragee?? Put some of those on there....

LABRAT, you need to go to your settings, I think its your forum settings, and see what your time is set on. Mine was wierd, too; you just gotta play with it until you figure it out right. I live in Texas, and its GMA-5 or 6, I can't remember which. [/quote]

And as for the cake, I think it looks good; if you had time, I would suggest drawing some constellation-like pictures, but that might be too much trouble to do by tomorrow.

I think a few stars, too. But I would probably use some gold luster dust and make them pretty small. It looks great!! And BTW - using the gumballs is NOT cheating...it's being creative thumbs_up.gif

For the cracks in the MMF...I've had this happen a couple of times. What I did was get just a tiny bit of crisco on the tip of my finger and very gently rub over the areas that are cracked. I use my finger because I find I can control the pressure better than with a q-tip or something...or you could use a very soft bristled paint brush. I would do it now so it has time to dry and so those areas won't be shiny. It's worked every time for me. HTH! icon_smile.gif

Maybe a little space ship? Stars would be cute, but if this is supposed to really represent the solar system, the stars are much further away from the sun than the planets, so you wouldn't find stars that close.

Pluto is 5.5 light hours away from the sun, while the nearest star is 4.3 light YEARS away, so to be reasonably to scale, the nearest star to your cake would be a few thousand miles away! icon_smile.gif

But they would still be VISIBLE, just as they are from earth. I think that's why it's a good idea. I don't think anyone was suggesting stars to scale - they would have to be as big as the sun (which is a star) in the center of the cake.

I would go with cake sparkles or silver dragees. It's adorable, whatever you do!

I've been told that I'm a bit too analytical for my own good - I try to hide it but sometimes it just slips out! icon_eek.gif

The only other thing I can suggest would be a comet streaking along the perimeter.

And a knife, forks, and plates so we can dig in!

I love it! The stars were the perfect touch. I love your marbled fondant, too. I haven't tried that yet...afraid I'll take it too far. Yours is great.

I was gonna say use some silver dragees and make some constellations...you know like the big dipper, etc. that the kids might recognize.......but your stars look nice
