So we are trying to have our website at a first version finalized point by the time I get legal and I am having trouble deciding how to do the About Us page. Some people seem to go very personal including a picture of themselves but than others keep it very non personal, solely about the cake business, sometimes I assume they bake out of their homes but they do their best to disguise it. What are your opinions on this--personal or not and why--DH thinks not personal at all though he says that some people might like the more homey feeling too, I on the other hand change my mind on a daily basis or more depending on how many websites I visit!!

I think the about me should promote who you are and why they should pick you. I don't feel pictures would be necassary (sp?), but maybe a paragraph about yourself would still give it that homey feel

I actually like the personal touch...I think it makes people feel more comfortable with the people they are working with.....here's a link to mine:

I have been working with a web designer. She says that people like to feel that they know you. She wants me to revamp my website, so that is what we are in the process of doing.

I agree; the 'about us' page should be designed to make people trust you to be the perfect one to create their perfect cake. Info should be geared toward that purpose.

Maybe I'm a scaredy-cat but I would be afraid to get too personal - wouldn't put my picture or info about my kids/grandkids on a website... no way. But your years of baking/decorating experience, related education, organizational skills, imagination and creativity... that's what I think you would want to include.

Can't wait to see your site!

Okay, but now I've looked at vivedcreations site (see her link above) and having the pics there really does make it nice! Maybe it's just because the people look so friendly - I would trust them for sure!

Oh, I don't know... I'm such a wishy-washy Libra!

I like to hear about how long they've been doing cakes and maybe what started them doing this as a business. I guess more on the personal side but not too personal. There will always be those that want more info, and those that want less. But be careful about putting too much info out there, it's just not safe! Good Luck in what you decide, I'm sure you'll do good!!

Kind of a mini resume but in a more friendly tone; helps to define your credibility. As said above ... it should help influence them on why you should be the one they choose.

I like the more personal ones. But not too personal. I would never put info about my kids and family on it. I think one should keep it pertaining to the business. I like when food people have the pics of them in their aprons or coats and in process of decorating (or staged to look like they were in process- I'm guessing that's more like it since it's never messy!!!).

I went more with the personal site. I find the internet quite "distant" and by having a mini resume (like indy said). I hope to make people more comfortable with what I do. icon_smile.gif

My original idea was to mention how my cake decorating started when as a military family who lived in Germany my kids would ask for specific cakes that I had to create from scratch or something along that line. I think I still have it written somewhere icon_cool.gif I had thought of putting a picture of DH and I at an Army ball a couple years ago. Funny how when I mentioned that part to DH he seemed to move more toward the personal touch. He so loves to be the center of attention. Thanks for your input though, it gives me some things to think about!!

I think it's neat to see pictures of renowned bakers, and of course famous bakers are higher profile anyway, but I would never, ever, ever, ever put my own picture on a website. Ever.

...Ever.

Did I mention, never...?

It's too easy for any, um, oddball, to look you up, even with just your phone number info, let alone your picture, locate your house, and show up on your doorstep someday. Believe me, I know. I had it happen once. So I'm standing there in my bathrobe, confronting a grumpy (male) customer who's wanting to know why I'm "not answering the phone" (Could be, because you called a business phone number at 7:00 A.M.!) Don't get me started...

Vote me: Leave it somewhat friendly-resume-ish and leave the pictures to the family album.

So Homecook, are saying you would consider putting your picture up, hee, hee. That is something to think about, plus DH looks pretty darn sexy in the picture I was thinking about using. I don't want some other woman stalking the cake decorators husband!!

I guess the rule is "keep it professional" if you want to ad a photo, it's nice to be in your kitchen or next to your cakes.
where and with whom you learned to bake and decorate, even if you are self teach.
and why are you passionate about what you do.
If you are married have kids and love benji jumping doesn't make you a better or worst cake designer, so it's not necessary.

Well, I am not a "legal" business so I have a personal website that shares my family info and passion for cakes as I was tired of having to have a photo album with me all the time so people could see my cakes.

If or when I become a legal bakery I would probably do the homey website that makes you feel warm and fuzzy; however, loose the family pics and go with a meet the decorator action pic in the studio/kitchen surrounded with cakes with a mini-resume.

Good Luck!! Website looks great so far!

I put a pic of me, but I edited it in a photo program so it kinda looks like a cartoon. I don't like my pictures and someone suggested I add one to my site, so that was the only way I was going to do it! icon_smile.gif
