My first thought is....are you nuts!!!LOL Seriously, I would never, ever, ever do it. The cake will not have any support at all.

That would be asking for a MAJOR cake disaster to happen...

Is there a reason you would want to do it that way?

I actually have done it with a small tiered cake. The layers were like 8, 6 and 3-inch but even that didn't work out so well because when we tried to serve it, it was difficult because the cake collapsed rather quickly. icon_cry.gif

I've sort of done this before. I made a tall dinosour cake that I stacked up about six cakes that were all close in size. (there's a pic in my photos)There was a large dowel going through the middle of them that was screwed the bottom board. I sculpted the cake, crumb coated and covered it with "scales". I didn't have any problem with the cakes falling apart but there wasn't a lot of weight on the top of the cakes. When I cut the cake I just cut a peice and just slid the spatula in between the layers to lift it. ...Not the neatest way to cut cake, but it worked, LOL. Of course I would never do this with a regular stacked wedding cake.

You are asking for disaster, I believe. It wouldn't make it through delivery, much less through cutting. What a mess you would have.

The only time I ever stack cakes without boards are if its a 3D cake that can support the weight, and I have dowels running through the cake, down to a thick styrofoam base.

I would never do it for a wedding cake. Anyway, it would be too hard to serve, you'd be messing up the top of the next tier while serving the one above.

I can't imagine why you would even consider doing such a thing.
