I am doing a cake with a 40's and 50's theme and can't really come up with something to do (honestly not really sure what kind of stuff was popular in those years) any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks to all
Well depending on how big a cake, you could do 2 tiers and one tier are scenes (fondant cutouts) from the 40s, one tier scenes from the 50s. Somehow work "1940" & "1950" into the design of the corresponding tier.
Google the years and you'll get lots of information on what was going on for ideas of things to add to the cake.
it will only be a 1/4 sheet cake. so not a lot of room to work with. i am probably going to do something with an edible image just not sure what kind of stuff to put on it.

You could do a sock hop type of image, poodle skirts, turquoise and pink, reccords, or maybe like a black& white cake with a picture of a house with a picket fence etc would be cool and evoke the era...james dean, marilyn monroe? Does any of this sound right/help/spark ideas?

For 50s think Happy Days... For 40s think big band music and swing! Fun stuff!

1940's was full of war and poverty. Rosie the Riviter was a huge symbol because women had to go to work while the men were at war. Big Bands were huge along with Frank Sinatra and Elle Fitzgerald.
1950's introduced Rock-n-Roll with Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, bobby sox and poodle skirts. Rosa Parks took a stand on the bus for black's rights
