It' s almost like a cookie press if you've ever seen one of those...it's made for clay to extrude it into different shapes...flat, a long noodle....different thicknesses......people use it for fondant though, in order to make rope borders and things...you can find them in the clay (polymer clay) section in the craft store.
I use it a lot too. If you check out the cakes in my photo gallery - the wedding cake with the rope garlands - the garlands were all done with a clay gun as well as the twisted rope on top. It's great because if you try to roll out ropes by hand - you don't always get the ropes perfectly even to twist. I finally figured out that the easiest way to use it is to warm the fonant up slighty in the microwave first - just a few seconds - otherwise it's really hard to push the fondant through! I have a metal one that I got at a cake decorating store made by a company called Kemper, I think.
Actually, I heard about the plastic green clay gun from Michael's but when I went there and looked in the clay section, I couldn't find it, and I asked a worker but she had no idea what I was talking about. The silver/metal one I got was actually from a cake decorating store, although it's not specifically for cake decorating - you can use it for other crafts - but I've never used it for anything but fondant or gumpaste, so I can't see any problems with it not being food safe.
