Most of the time, I use freezer paper to cover my board. Then I put the cake right on that and freeze it until I'm ready to decorate. The freezer paper is big, cheap, and white, and no grease marks will show on it. I just cut it to fit and tape it down on the back!
If you need something prettier, I read on here the other day that some people use dollar store vinyl tablecloths, which come in tons of colors / patterns to coordinate with your cake.
So is there a board between the cake and the covering? I mean, one of those cardboard cake boards in between?
What?
No, You cover the cardboard with something (foil, contact paper, etc..) and put your cake on that board.

I love freezer paper if I want my board to be white. ![]()
foam core board covered with butcher paper (the shiney side up) or foam core board covered with part of one of those cheap plastic party table cloths. They come in lots of colors adn are cheap and you can use one for several cakes becasue they are big!
I switched from fanci-foil covered boards to logicpic polyestrene (sp) boards this year, and I LOVE not having to hassle and spend time cutting and taping any more. Plus I often get the boards back, and they're sanitizable and re-usable. ![]()
logicpic.com if you want to check
i just went to the dollar store to check out the table cloths. i was dissappointed in the color options at my local store. so i picked up some shiny wrapping paper there instead. will grease soak into the wrapping paper? should i cover it with contact paper too?

Don't know, just cut a small piece and put a glob on icing on it and let it set for a few days, see what happens.

If you use wrapping papers, comic pages, scrapbooking papers, fanci foils that are not certified foodsafe, etc., you should have a barrier between it and the cake/icing--many of the dyes in those papers contain lead and can leach into foods.
I use many types of papers and either cover the entire surface with clear contac paper or cover an area with clear contac that is about 1/2 inch larger than the bottom cake tier.
I also always use a foamcore underboard below the first tier-under ALL tiers, for that matter. Those are good to use for many reasons including additional support so that icings don't crack and also ease of moving the tier(s) around. That way, the most touching the contac paper (or any other covering on the decorative cake board) is the final cake border.
