For my son's birthday we are going to a rock dig that is held every year. I was thinking of departing from his normal science cake and making one to reflect the dig. I don't want to make a pic or tool because I don't have silver dust and making one out of gray is just - wrong. Anyway, here's a link to the place where we're going. I was thinking of sculpting a two layer to look like the pit, but I'm really pretty open to suggestions. I'm afraid that making the pit would end up just looking like a glob of goo. TIA.

I took a look. I have no idea except if you make the pit and add fondant figures for the children at the dig. Hope it helps and here is a bump. Good luck.

got the horseshoe pan or a bundt pan?

the open in either can be the pit (can cut bundt to open it up even more.

one of the dogs looking on (idea from first of the two dog pics) --- as kids dig in a pit.
"Make my birthday happy -- find a bone!"

jelly beans can be used as "gem" rocks--
and there's some chocolate candy "rocks" that some stores sell.

and even tho' probably no diamonds at pit --

could add a hunk of rock candy (the big sugar crystals)

"Like a diamond in the rough -- you're very special. Happy birthday"

Make a cake that looks like a bucket of gems.

I have a zen garden cake in my photos. I made the rocks out of rolled buttercream and used brownulated sugar for the sand. Maybe it can help inspire you?

You could hide doug's jelly beans under the BC for the kids to "find"

I think making a pit (like in the first pic) is a great idea! Part of the cake is the mountain/rock mass there. The rest is flat, make it all marbelized fondant covered and maybe paint on a few streaks to match the seams in the rock. Then have a few fondant figures (or plastic ones) standing at the base or near the base holding onto shovels. For proportionate sized 'gems' you could probably pick up some shiny candy in the bulk section of the store, and smash it so it looks like little gems, and then sort of place them around to look realistic.
(sounds like a super fun idea for a birthday party)

Domino makes it. It comes in a box. it is brown sugar that is granulated. It truly looks like sand. It tastes good too.
