Pass The Test??

Does anyone have any experience or tips on how I can get through a Perceiver test with flying colors??

All I know about them is that they ask you lots of hard questions that could have different answers, and that honesty or loyaly to the business over loyalty to a friend is a big factor. My answer to those types of tests is usually, "It depends"!! I don't think that will get me this promotion!

I think it depends on what the company is looking for--i.e.: the type of position being considered. For example, if they are looking for a manager, they will want someone who is a Thinker and a Judger as opposed to someone who is a Feeler.

I think you'll need to provide more detailed info if you want more answers, since its all relative to the industry/position. Hopefully someone else has some good advice for you, too thumbs_up.gif

It's for the administrative asst to the Director of the school that I work in. I currently work in the office and do things for him, and he originally flat out asked me to work for him, but today after talking to the supt, they've decided to post the job. I'm confident in my computer skills but have never taken one of those perceiver (sp?) tests.

I've heard that questions are asked that make you choose between a good friend and the job and things like that. icon_surprised.gif

I had to take a test like that for one of my former jobs. Just answer honestly. If you think it depends on the exact situation then answer it depends. There usually is no right or wrong answer. They want to get a feel for how you would/will react to different situations. Trust me it is a lot more intimidating that it sounds. Just answer honestly. Not what you think they are looking for. Most people seem to balance out the test in the end.

It sounds like they are looking for answers that are compatible to that situation--like good organizational skills, multi-tasking abilities, friendly to others (phone, office visitors) while in a hectic situation (middle of trying to finsih 5 things when someone calls/shows up). Your answers to the questions they will ask will evaluated in those contexts.

I agree that you should answer honestly. If you would answer 'it depends' that's not something they want to hear--so think to yourself 'how would this situation be addressed on-the-job? And answer the question that way. Example: Do you usually keep your desk in an orderly manner or an unkept manner? You think, hmm...it depends on the situation. But you answer 'in an orderly manner' because it shows that you can organize and manage not only objects but situations/people as well--try to look at the questions metaphorically: messy desk= harry sitaution: how do you handle it? Do you get all disheveled (messy desk) or do you methodically take care of whatever situation needs to be 'organized' and addressed(organized desk)?
See where this all leads? This is how they use the answers to determine if you 'fit' or not. (Just the opposite answer is what they would want to hear if they were looking to hire someone in an artistic field--messy desk=unstructured, not bound to rules and regulations and the 'proper' hierarchial way to approach something, etc.)

But usually, if you just answer honestly, you have the best chance of succeeding. It's really difficult to 'fool' the test. Either you are the kind of personality they are looking for, or not. Plus, they don't rely 100% on the test to make their hiring decision (at least they shouldn't).

It would take quite a time investment on your part to coach your answers--so I think the best thing you can do is simply answer the questions honestly and try to keep in the back of your mind how the question relates to the job--asking questions about how loyal you are to your friends has nothing to do about your friends and everything to do with the way you would handle situations for your company.

Well, a lot has happened. Last week all of the support staff was called in to a meeting and were told that I would be doing the job but not getting a "promotion". Long story, but the bottom line is that I'm going to be doing the work, but don't get the title or a raise. I'm so mad.

On top of that, they are hiring another full time person that will be answering to the director as well. So he is not going to have a specific assistant at all.

I don't understand it at all. And now, until all of this goes into effect, I've been doing work for him, even though his REAL assistand hasn't left yet! icon_cry.gificon_evil.gif

At least I don't have to worry about the silly test now, huh.

Ahhh Sunlover, that really sucks!

Are you guys unionized? You should really stick up for yourself, that situation isn't fair at all!!

I wish you the best of luck and hopefully the situation will get better.

Good Luck, and on the bright side, like you said, you don't need to worry about that test anymore thumbs_up.gif

Oh, and if it is possible, you should ask for a new review, even if it isn't your normal time, and request that your file be updated to show your new responsibilities...this is especially important since you don't get a new title!

Well, I've never gotten a bad review! All of my evaluations are very high. I feel that I didn't get the job because I'm married to the treasurer and everyone would think it was favoritism; even though he has nothing to do with the decision. I lose either way. If I get a job it's because of him, and I don't get jobs because of him!

I told him to ask for a bigger raise to make up for the one I lost! icon_biggrin.gif
