Need Ideas For Weight Lifting And Theatre Hello Dolly
Decorating By FancyLayne23 Updated 25 Apr 2006 , 11:07pm by Doug
I am needing ideas for 2 different cakes. One is for a weight lifting thing at my friends school and one is for my brothers musical theater group, they are doing "Hello Dolly". I have been looking on the internet and am not having any luck. Please help. Thank you.
How about dumbells for the weight lifting cake and doesn't Dolly own a hat shop? Prehaps you could do a beautiful hat with feathers and the like?
I thought of that but I don't think I would be able to get an edible image so soon. Something to look into though. Thanks.
I did a weight lifting cake last week...but did use an edible image.
If I had more time...I would have used either sports ball or mini ball to make a dumb bell. You could use a dowel rod in the middle of the 2 balls.
Maybe color the balls grey.
Just a thought! ![]()
Sorry, but I can't come up with anything for weight lifting that anyone else can't suggest.
For Hello Dolly:
It was Irene Molloy who owned the hat shop. Dolly was one of her customers. Dolly wore enormously brimmed hats in all versions of the musical, both stage and screen, which were adorned with the huge feathers that were so popular back then.
Dolly's two biggest scenes were Before the Parade and Hello Dolly. The parade is obvious, a parade follows her down the street. In the Hello Dolly number she comes down a staircase at the Harmonia Gardens and is greeted by all the staff, as she used to hang out there. She is dressed in a most elegant evening gown for that time period (early 1900's).
Here's a link to give you some ideas on what they wore back then - very Victorian in their dress.

Personally, I would go with a silhouette image of a woman from that time. I am trying to attach one that a friend sent me from some newsletter. If it doesn't come through, PM me with your primary E-mail address and I will send it that way.

"Before the Parade" was added for the movie; it is not in the stage version (first hand knowledge having directed HS production of stage version)
building off hat idea...could do just that make an enourmous -- use the 18" half round or carve from sheet cake) hat.
(tho'...also speaking from experience, my casts always loved it when we could get a photo or the show logo on the cake...but that point they feel they OWN!!!!!! the show. -- logo easy to get....photos...well, in the panic -- who has time to stop and take a photo!)
well, then we must have used the movie version of the script back in 1974, when I played Ernestina Money, because that character was also cast to play the Statue of Liberty during the parade scene. Either way, the musical is one of the best ever, don't you agree?
I would love to see your final cake. Please, please, please post it for us when you are done!!

best ever?...that's like asking a mother which child is her favorite.
done so many and loved them all. the one that I keep doing over and over again tho' is Bye Bye Birdie....(could be a sentimental attachement to the original lead in both the Broadway and movie version: Dick van Dyke -- we're from same hometown! (as is also Gene Hackman)
looking forward to seeing the cake too!
I'll do my best to make the cake and when/if I do I will post it. Thank you everyone for the ideas.
Just an FYI - I just checked on eBay for the album, and they listed all the songs for the 1964 original cast version. Before The Parade Passes By is listed as one of the songs.
I bought the album - it was only $1.99, and guaranteed in very good condition! Can you tell which musical is my favorite?

Lol. Well, my brother is the lead in this musical and I'm so excited. Well, he's been the lead in every play for 2 years now-lol. But still just as excited as the first time. I wanted to make this cake for him and his castmates. So all your ideas have been greatly appreciatied.
as if I couldn't
(the thing I remember most of that show was;
I HATE!!!! the sides the Tams gives your for anyone but the leads!)
(DING! think it's time stop there or this is going to be come the cake central rendition of "anything you can do...I can do better!!) from:
_____name that musical_____
