I was just on ebay and saw quite a few stands and plates. They were fairly reasonable.

If you have a Big Lots near you...check it out. I got a 12" cake stand that looks like silver/chrome with the scrolls & mirror for $12.99.

I used those beautiful glass bricks for 16 table cakes last winter. About $5-$8 each at Home Depot

I use the glass blocks too! Also think outside of the cake box so to speak...flower stands, ceramic pillars, wooden boxes covered with fabric, any sturdy base with a ceramic tile on top ......

Glass Bricks?! That is such a great idea!

I always wait for the 40% and 50% off coupons from AC Moore and Michaels. Although they don't have the greatest selection.

I've used cylinder-shaped glass vases. They're dirt cheap and come in at least 3 heights at most places like Michaels, Garden Ridge, etc. I put one two-layer tier on top of each vase. I wouldn't recommend slicing on top of one, unless it's a fairly small layer and doesn't have a lot of "overhang." In most cases, you would want to have the server put the tier on the table top prior to slicing. Looks pretty, and you can fill the cylinders with flowers or tulle if you want.
