Okay, I mixed my dough up a couple of days ago. I have to say, right off the bat I had myself confused because I could have sworn in the past I'd always used 2 sticks of butter (margarine, actually) but the recipe calls for 2 cups (4 sticks). I just don't remember ever using 4 sticks!! That threw me off from the get go! Anyways, the dough was pretty sticky when I made it, it never has been before. But I figuired since it was going to be in the fridge for a couple days (as I usually do) it would be fine. Well, when I took the dough out it was a little sticky today. It was sticking to the wax paper and the roller, that's never happened! And then when they came out of the oven they were cracking as I took them off the pan. They are really dry and crumbly. Never had that happen before. It was raining here all day, I remember recently reading that that can throw your baking off, but my issues started a couple of days ago when I made the dough. Oh, well...they are good enough for the family

Well that stinks. I don't have any suggestions (I never have luck using anything other than just made dough), but I hope you figure out what went wrong.
I can say that I started weighing out my flour (Antonia74's suggestion) and that improved the quality of my cookie dough.
Hmm, sounds like maybe you needed more flour. The fridge might have been the reason for the drying out. The one time I froze the dough, I hated it! It was dry and then the cookies had little cracks in them once out of the oven. I will only use just made dough now and freeze the already baked cookies instead.
About the sticks of butter , maybe the first time you only prepared half the recipe.I was confused with the 1 cup (2 sticks) when I tried halving the recipe for testing it. So I wrote 4 sticks where it says 2C in the whole recipe, to avoid this cofussion in the future.
Thanks for your thoughts! I'm just chalking it up to "one of those things". I've made those dang things dozens of times and never had a problem. The funny thing is, my mom came to spend the night and I had the cookies sitting there unfrosted...was thinking of throwing them out just because they were so crumbly...and she wanted to know when I was frosting them. So I whipped up a quick batch of BC, spread it on and let the kids put some sprinkles on. They ended up tasting so yummy...both my mom and I were downstairs in the middle of the night sneaking cookies
So they were a failure in the texture department, huge success in taste.
I think I forgot to mention in my original post they were actually a modified NFSC, but one I've made plenty of times!
Oh, well....Just one of those things...Jodie
