Hi-- I'm trying to decide whether I should charge extra for fondant figures and royal icing/chocolate transfers. Up to this point, I haven't charged extra for these, and often its my idea to do the "extra" touches anyway. But as I'm getting busier, I'm wondering if I should charge a few dollars extra for these things.
What do you all do? If you do charge extra, is it just a flat rate... or do you charge per figure/decoration. (I don't want to charge, say for fondant polka dots or small flowers...I'm talking more about the transfers and sculpted figures).
yes, you should charge extra...for the extras!!! these extras usually take time to add...so you should be compensated!!
I start fondant figures at $15...for bows & stuff like that. I've only done a few figurines....babies...and charged $20 for them. I start my transfers at $10 for BC and $15 for chocolate transfers. For little things like the fondant polka dots and little flowers I usually add a few extra dollars!! But for things that take more time...the price will go up!
Usually when a customer asks me about a cake...I will give them the price w/the 'extras' and without the extras. Most of the time...they'll go for the extras!!
Thanks, its definitely interesting to see what others charge. I guess I'm just afraid a high price will scare people away from requesting the extras. I feel like the fondant figures, etc. are what makes my cakes stand out from some of the others in my area. But maybe you're right, and people will be willing to pay more... If anyone else has thoughts on this, I'd love to hear!
This is just a thought but maybe in your portfolio (online or print) you could just have a price of the cake "as shown". I agree you should charge fo rthem but I also see the flip side where people don't like to feel like they are being nickled and dimed. HTH!
