To all of you who use luster dust on a regular basis on your cakes and cookies, do you normally tint the fondant underneath if you are using colored luster dust. I bought a beautiful rose colored dust, and haven't had much luck with it. Perhaps I am just not using the right amount or method. When I have tried to thin it down and use it as paint, it just ends up looking kind of like blush on a white cookie. I just can't get that sparkle. Should I have been using a pink colored fondant under it? If I try to use it dry, I just cant get it to adhere just right. What type of brush should I be using to apply it? Whats the ratio of liquid to powder that works well? Anyone had any luck using luster dust over royal icing accents? I'm sure the answer to these question are quite simple, I just don't have much experience with the stuff. Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi,

Well, I´ve used my luster dust on white fondant as well as on colored fondant, I guess it depends on how rich do I want my color to be. I always get a pearly sparkle to it and I add generous amounts too (when using dry). I use a blush brush to apply (I bought a new kabuki brush just for this) works perfectly... that is for large areas though.
Now, for small areas I use a wilton brush.

When using it with extracts, as a liquid paint, I just put a little dust on a plate and start adding extract with a brush (wilton brush) until I get the desired consistency. Extract will evaporate fast so just add some more extract to keep the paint thin.

Now on Royal Icing, I´ve never done that but I´m thinking you can do it once the RI has set.
Hope this helps and I didn´t confuse you more!
