i would like to make a suit case cake for someone that will be moving away. i have seen pics of this kind of cake using a 1/2 sheet cake then cutting it in half then stacking it. i would like to have it look like the top part is kinda opened with cloths falling out, a over packed look to the suit case.

1) how would i get the top lid to look open, i have seen this with some box cakes but i have no clue how to do it
2) is a 1/2 sheet cake cut in half a good size for this cake
3) crusting buttercream.....thats what i would use to get that smoothed look? i would use fondant for accents on the case and for the clothes

any and all help would be appreciated
thanks

You could probably use a big chunk of fondant which you could mask with the clothes to keep the lid propped open. Some people have even used a piece of cardboard and covered it in fondant since it is much lighter than cake. That would be easier to prop up. Crusting buttercream or fondant should work for smooth covering. Hope this helps.

Here is a link to another post. They suggest sending a private message to the boween who made a suitcase cake.

I made a suitcase full of money with an open lid. I used a foam dummy for the lid and propped it up with wooden cake dowels. I used fondant to cover both the cake and the dummy. You could do a similar thing but replace the money with clothes and you could make a toothbrush and toothpaste etc...you could even print off some paper money from the country they are traveling to and sit it on the clothes.

There is a picture of the one I did in my photo's.

Good luck with it!

socake...that cake is awesome.....I just wanted to add that I made a treasure chest cake and I made the lid (thanks to boween's idea) out of rice krispie treats, it was light weight and edible ....so if you want everything edible that could be an alternative instead of the cake dummy...otherwise I think the dummy is a great idea. Or if you need a lot of cake...I would think that you could just do two cakes stacked and then just simply arrange some fondant clothing on top of the bottom layer and then just lay the top layer on top allowing the clothes to kind of hang out and over the edge.......that would give the illusion that the suit case is stuffed full and some clothes got stuck while it was being closed.....hope that makes sense.
