I got a call yesterday from a lady that owns a very popular boutique and she wanted to know if I would be interested in having a dummy cake on display for people to see and to get my name out there a bit more. I need to call her back today and get more details but I'm very excited about this opportunity!

I have orders for a couple of wedding cakes but I haven't actually done any of them yet and I've never worked with dummy cakes. Does anyone have any ideas or helpful hints on working with dummy cakes?

If it's okay with the store owner and she has the room, I'm wanting to do a couple different wedding cake designs and possibly a groom's cake in addition to a few cookie favor designs.

I attached the picture of the one cake I'm definately wanting to try (it was posted here before but I originally saw in Ladie's Home Journal) but I'm hoping to do a square cake, too. Any popular colors I should try?

Sorry for all of the questions and thank you in advance!!

WOW what a great opportunity. Definitely find out how much space you have - it would be great to show at least three different techniques or styles. The cakes don't have to be large. As for the colors - I'm not sure. Do some internet research for hot new trends in weddings or ask the local florist on what they are seeing as the trends for this year. Good luck and congrats!!!

I don't have any suggestions as I am not familiar with dummy cakes; but I think you have a great opportunity here! Be sure to bake the lady a cake as a thank you gift! (Maybe duplicating the sign of her boutique.) She is very kind.

When I've done displays, I've done one real "dummy" cake, and a placard in a nice frame with pictures of my other work. It takes up less space for the store (space=money), and you can put all of your information on it as well.

As for a dummy cake, be sure to do a design that won't crumble if people touch it, because you know they will touch it. And have it perfectly smooth. And use some color.
