This has been a busy week for me 4 orders, 3 of them came from this new client. Thursday she picked up a 12 inch round cake that I had made for her daughter's teacher, yesterday her husband picke up 2 dz cupcakes that I made for her daughter's birthday party and today he picked up a stacked cake that they will be taking to school to celebrate her birthday. When she ordered the cake she told me she wanted a stacked cake and that she wanted it to be something that her daughter would be proud of - the rest was up to me, color, shape, decorations. Well she just called me in tears to thank me for the cake, she says she knows I am a busy Mom and appreciates me creating something so beautiful for her daughter......that's why I do this - it can't be for the money - it is because it is my way of making someone feel special.
Only a fellow decorator can appreciate this and that is why I am sharing my story.
Hello fellow decorator....bless you for the feeling you get out of seeing the sheer enjoyment on someone's face when they see a work of art that you've created just for them! That's why cake decorating is so great! It's so personal! It's not like a painting someone's done to sell, or a piece of pottery. Cake's are made with one individual in mind (or a couple for a wedding) and that's what makes each creation so special!!
I think cake decorating is such a wonderful gift that has been given to us because we get to bring so much joy to people on special occasions, (not to mention giving them something sweet and wonderful to eat!) as well as getting a chance to let our creative juices (and icing) flow!!
If a decorator is in it just for "the money" then they're in the wrong business!! I am so thankful for any opportunity to decorate a cake for some occasion, payment or not! In fact, I can' hardly remember the last cake I was paid for!
God bless every cake decorator/artist for what they do!!
Thank you for sharing jax!
blessings 2 u 2

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I do some volunteer work, and week before last, one of my fellow volunteers (who was turning 84) kept mentioning that she was going to give up her birthday to be with us the following week. So, of COURSE, I HAD to make her a cake. I just whipped something up and put what I thought was a nice "old lady" edible image on it. Well, she cried! Not only was it pretty, I chose her favorite color - quite by accident! I got profuse thanks, and many hugs. (I hardly knew this woman.) And Saturday, I got a nice card of thanks, with a little prayer inside (she knows I'm going through some rough times right now). All because I dashed off a simple little cake to be nice to an old lady. You never know when someone really needs that extra little something.
I know what you mean, I had the same feeling just a few weeks back. WHen I started decorating cakes, it was mostly for a creative outlet, a hobby. There were times (actually a lot) when it can get frustrating and stressfull when making a cake. BUt then it's all worth it when we see the twinkle in the persons eye when they see the cake. A few weeks ago, I made this birthday cake for an elderly lady who is really in a bad shape in the hospital. She wasn't eating much and she was in and out of consciousness. It was just a small cake but when I made it, I thought about her and gave a lot of TLC and a small prayer that she will get well. When my mom brought it to her, she was so happy and said that my cake encouraged her. And from then on she started getting more alert and eating better. It really warmed my heart to hear this. And from then on too, I see making cakes from a totally different view.
