Can someone give me a quick low down on fondant. I don't use it but I love all the stuff you can do with it but i know nothing about it as I've always used buttercream. I just wanted to know how you put it on cakes and such and can you use it with buttercream icing? Is it kinda like working with clay for the forming it and making things with it? Thanks in advance.

I call it playdough for cake decorators....it can cover an entire cake and you can shape it into almost anything. It is edible as well.

What people usually do is put a thin layer of icing on the cake, make it smooth as possible (so you don't see the bumps underneath the fondant) and then place the fondant over the buttercream. You can also decorate fondant with buttercream.
Yes, it is a lot like working with soft clay.
HTH!
