My fiance and I have been looking at wedding cake designs. He would like (but is not asking) for ME to make our wedding cake! icon_eek.gif I am making everything else as it is. This is the second wedding for both of us, and I made all but the cake and dresses for my first, so I know I can handle the pressure of it. However, if it gets screwed up, it's all my fault! This will be my first wedding cake. He has agreed to help design it and help with the cake.

I am in TROUBLE because when I asked if he planned on helping me, he said "It's ABOUT TIME you let me help!" Who woulda guessed?!?!?! Here I thought he was frustrated because the house was filled with all my stuff, but now I find out that he felt left out. icon_cry.gif

Now, how much do I *really* have to let him help? I have no idea his talents, and have always worked by myself. He wants this to be a "together thing." HELP!!!

Feel very very very thankful that he wants to do something like decorate cakes with you. I would give my right arm. That being said, I would make him do the grunt work(kneading, mixing, etc) Edited t say, please try to be patient. once he has a chance to have this time with you, he might decide it's not really his thing.

My husband really likes to help with the whole "artistic" stuff of decorating. He has a really good eye and I have found that I tend to rely on and love hearing his opinion. Sometimes he'll just sit down and start looking at it...then start giving me some fresh ideas. It's really nice to get a pair of fresh eyes.

icon_eek.gificon_confused.gificon_lol.gificon_rolleyes.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I told him that he could mix, check cakes in the oven, etc. With his tendency to "sample" everything near him, I did put a condition on it, which he agreed to immediately:

I GET MY FIRST KA!!!!!!!!

With him around, I need to make double batches of everything lol.

He did say, though, that he is not for rent, no matter how many arms, legs, or children are offered. icon_confused.gificon_wink.gif

Hmmm, now which color do I want for my KA? icon_biggrin.gifthumbs_up.gif

Gee, what more could you ask for? A man (DH) to work with you on cakes, and a KA to go along with him! Sounds like a great deal to me! Congratulations on both!

Isn't it great?! He is a wonderful man, and fun, too! And I can't WAIT to get the KA!

We just talked about him helping last night, and he wants to start today. Since he asked about taking a cake to the cookout, he is helping do it. This may be a blessing! I just feel so bad that I never asked him before - he's the one who buys me all my supplies, and he never mentioned it once.

if you are planning to have roses on your cake why not let him make fondant roses........my daughter (it was for her cake) and i had great fun weeks before the wedding making them......it gave us an outlet to discuss things in a non-stressful situation....which is hard to do before a wedding....and great laughs when one of them didn't turn out just right icon_surprised.gif !!!

Great idea! Where do I find the instructions? I have just started with mmf, and haven't done any flowers yet with it.

I am sooooo jealous!! I couldn't get my hubby to help, even if I held a gun to his head(joking, I wouldn't actually do that). Just think of the fond memories when you look back at the wedding and remember making the cake together. Awsome!!!!

Let us know how it goes. Can't wait to see the pictures.

LOL

Don't assume that he can't get into the artistic stuff! Just think of all the guys who are superb pastry chefs! His being interested in your cakes is a blessing. Embrace it!

I did my own wedding cake. I just had to plan my morning carefully. As it turned out, it rained buckets (it was an outside wedding at a public place), so we just threw a plastic drop cloth over the table, I got under it and decorated away. By the time the wedding started, the rain had gone away, and everything was fine. But, it was a challenge.

You can do this. Especially with his help! Just think how proud you'll be!

I have looked at that before, but never tried it. Is it easy? What are the steps? I am used to bc roses, one petal at a time. how do the looks compare?

its very easy....just a little time consuming......which would be why its a great job for your fiance's icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif ....you basically just make the center of the rose......and then however many petals you need.....they give you a couple of tools to use...one you use to cut the petals...and one for flattening and shaping the petals.....and a few other tools......we got to be pretty fast at it

if you look at my photos....on my daughters wedding cake you will see them....(not at the very bottom...those are real petals)....but all the others are the ones we made..........we got lots of good comments about them.......let me know if i can be of more help! Donna usaribbon.gifusaribbon.gif

My husband is an excellent baker and quickly learned to decorate. Men already have the muscle control that many women lack when starting out. Do some practice cakes and see how it works out! We have fun working together.

Well, we tried one.

Let's see... told him he could bake the cake while I jumped in the shower, and he baked a mini two-tier! 8 inch and 6 inch. "Thought it would be nice." I have NEVER made a two-tier around him! Then he mixes the icing per my instructions. I say to add "a bit" more water, and he adds 1/4 cup before I can stop him. Running out of powdered sugar, I can't save the icing and it slides off the cake before we get to the barbeque.

On the plus side, he can crumb coat like a dream! Icing wouldn't hold up, but I had a bit of stiffer stuff so I made roses and slapped them on the top and called it a day.

WHO in their RIGHT MIND would ATTEMPT a two-tier cake from start to finish (including baking!!) in 90 minutes? We also had to shower and get the kids ready in that time, so I wasn't able to supervise like I should have.

Practice, practice, practice! I think he will do better with mmf, actually. Lots of experience with play-doh and models. Perhaps he will do the cake painting better than I do, since he has the patience. He uses single-bristle brushes on the models! And he has airbrushing experience, too. Hmmm, that gives me LOTS of ideas! Better not kill him off yet, he may be of use yet :evil evil grin hahaha:
