We just got a flier about the cakewalk for the spring fling at my son's elementary school this weekend. It's a contest. We take our cake and cookie entries in Friday for judging for Saturdays carnival. There isn't a theme. The flier said something about who is our school's Ace of Cakes. I was thinking about doing a variation on a cake I saw here. It was a hunk of cheese, with fondant mice on it. I'd do one popping up out of a hole in the cheese, one sitting on the cake board, and one lying down on top with a big round belly like he ate too much. do you think I should do something different? I can get pretty competitive, and I really want to win this! Any ideas for cookies?

I like the idea you came up with. THe mice sound great. Where in Ohio is your school? Make sure you post a picture.

The mice and cheese idea is adorable! People would love it!

Or, does this school have a mascot or symbol? You could play off that...

Or you could go with something related to Spring, since it's a Spring Fling. A flower garden would be pretty, with a little fondant watering can, picket fence, bluebirds, butterflies...

Whatever you do, your kiddo will be so proud, and feel so lucky that his mom is involved in his school. So you've already won, in my opinion!!!!

I was thinking the same things - I 'ditto' you dolphinheron. Playing off the school mascot may win you extra points. icon_biggrin.gif

The school mascot is a firebird, and colors are blue and silver. I want to do something sculpted, and I'm drawing a blank on anything related to the school theme or colors. I really think I'll just probably do the cheese and mice. It won't take long, and I'm alst the food chair for the fling, which means a lot of work!

Jenn, I love your idea of the cheese and mice. Everyone will flip out and think it is so cute and you will WOW them all!! Since I love cookies I was going to recommend a cookie idea but it may be a bit morbid! What about mice traps...like the old school rectangle ones. That would be an easy cutter and not a ton of detail. Like I said, it may be too horrible for a kid's event but just a thought.

I have also seen cookies done with the pie slice cookie cutter that was decorated like a slice of cheese that would coordinate with your cake.

Whatever you decide on will be fabulous and will amaze. Don't forget to have a wad of business cards in your pocket because I am sure you will get a ton of new clients from this!

I never thought of doing cheese slice cookies! I'm glad I didn't cut out my bugs and flowers yet to bake (running behind!) I'm going to make two mousetrap cookies to put on the board with the cake! I wish I could go with you and Cammi tomorrow! Darn field trip!

Jenn,
I'm sad you can't make it tomorrow. The field trip will be fun, I love that place!
We will have to do it again soon.

Can't wait to see your creations!!

Sorry to be the one to go against what's popular, and although I think the cheese and mice thing does look cute, I would not be able to eat it. But maybe that's just me. Mice as food? icon_confused.gif It just makes me shiver thinking about it.
I love the more spring time ideas, picket fence and flowers...but just my opinion of course.

Well, the mouse trap idea has been vetoed (how in the world is that spelled???) by a few friends and my dad, so I'm not doing those. Just doing the big hunk of cheese and the fondant mice. The mice are going to be cutesy, not gross. I think the kids who are doing the cake walk will like it.

Something like this, but with a couple more mice.....

I just delivered the cake to the school, and their jaws hit the floor when they saw it. They are putting it in the silent auction instead! I'm going to put a $25 gift certificate with it. I got two orders jus tdelivering it! I'm so excited! I'm hoping that htis could be big for me and my business!
