What is the difference between royal and buttercream icing? I have never used royal icing and would like to know for what type of decorating is royal better than buttercream.

Royal icing usually dries fairly hard and mostly consists of icing sugar and powdered meringue.BC has shortening and butter and may crust a bit but still remains soft.Better for the teeth!! Royal icing is usually only used when covering show cakes or dummy cakes and icing flowers.BC is more widely used as an everyday icing.

Royal icing dries pretty hard, and will last quite a while...lots of decorations are made out of royal, like roses.

If you have a ton of flowers to do, it's way more reasonable to make them out of royal so that you can have more time to get them done and they can sit out for days. Also a lot of the flowers, you have to use royal because you have to do them in a flower former and they have to dry in tinfoil and then you have to peel them out.
