I need some opinions or suggestions for a cake I have due this weekend.
This is the invitation which she wants copied. I am doing a 12 inch double layer ladybug. I am thinking the second layer I can cut in half, like the second pic and fan out just a little to make the wings. cake for the head and cupcakes for the antenaes.
Is that a plan or do you great people with the great ideas have any other suggestions? I love all of the ideas and stuff I get on here. Please, anyone.

May be you can cover with fondant then put another layer cut in half to look like wings.

I think I would make the top "wings" from fondant/gumpaste today or tomorrow so it would have time to dry by this weekend. Then I'd make the entire cake double layer and just add a fondant top to include the little chocolate indention where the back of the lady bug is. Then I'd just place the top dry wings over the top of the cake. I'd use 1/2 or 1/4 of the sports ball pan for the head. For the antennae I'd probably roll fondant/gumpaste into little rolls and then coil them around and let them dry too. Once cake is assembled you can just stick the antennae directly into the cake.

I think how you have it planned will work great but you wanted other feedback so I thought I'd tell you how I would do it. The invitation is adorable and I'm sure your cake will be too. As a matter of fact I'm saving this post so I can refer back to it. I would love to make a smaller lady bug cake just for the fun of it. Please post your photos of your completed cake. I'd love to see it.

I agree with previous poster....do the wings in fondant and stick on. if you're pushed for time and don't think they will be dry enough you could cut some cake board in half and cover the boards with fondant and stick on...that way you won't have to worry abou the wings drooping on the tips if it's not dry all the way or if it's really humid.

Antennae....could also do royal icing and allow to dry and stick them in. I would make a couple extra sets in case they break trying to place them on the first try. This will give you a cleaner look from the side as opposed to doing cupcakes for the antennae (would like cute from the top, but not the sides)
