I'm looking for ideas. This will be a 2-layer 12 x 18 sheetcake. The birthday gal is 80 years old and goes on 2 overseas mission trips per year. The ideas just aren't flowing for me icon_confused.gif .

Any ideas icon_rolleyes.gif

What about all the great things that she has done on her missions. Places that she has gone, all the people that she has helped. She is 80 and still going on 2 missions a year. Other than missions and crurch does she have any other hobbies. Need more info.

I see an angel somewhere on that cake, for sure. Maybe an angel with a suitcase (if that doesn't sound too hokey - I think it's kinda cute!) And I like the idea of a globe or world map, like debster said.

Hey the angel can be looking over the world from the sky. Write the scripture Go ye into the workld and preach the gospel to every living creature or something like that. Or you are the light of the world. A ray shining on the map or globe? Post a picture of whatever you do please?

Okay, FIRST of all where did she do her missions work? I would definitely do a globe (lots of ideas on CC) and make the country she was in a DIFFERENT color than the rest. Then around the edges use the people fondant cut outs by Wilton; side by side like they are holding hands. My friend did this for her SIL who is a missions worker. It was a BIG hit!

fbct of FEET, yes, i said FEET icon_smile.gif there is a verse (romans i think) that says, "how beautiful are the feet of those that bring the good news" . when i was younger and traveled alot doing missions, that was one of my favorite verses!

or, perhaps a globe or world map, and placing a little flag or "pin" on as many locations as she can remember having been to.

perhaps happy birthday in different languages? here is one i did with that concept. (yes, it looks like a ufo, i know ) icon_smile.gif http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=allby&uname=melysa&cat=0&pos=55

If you have/can borrow an open book baking pan you could have the Bible as the foundation (literally as well as figuratively) for your other elements.

I just did a cake for a missions trip that was to Argentina and geared towards children and VBS. Glance at mine and see if it might get your thoughts going. I wrote a Bible verse around the side which pertained to their vision. I'll be interested in what you come up with because I have a heart for missions and missionaries are very dear to me.

Open book bible with a half ball world on top so the Bible is opening up to the world. Then you can add personal touches to it that are meaningful to her specifically.

oooooh some more great ideas. Thanks!

I do have the book/bible pan but the cust. specifically requested a 2-layer 12 x 18. That's a great idea! Then again, cust. is a friend - hmmmmm.

What I have going through my mind (at the moment) is incorporating several suggestions:

top of cake - globe with fondant cut-out people circling around it.
sides of cake - feet going all the way around the cake.

Then also put the "how beautiful are the feet..." scripture on top. That is also one of my favorite verses. It reminds me of a retreat I went on last year.

Does that sound okay?

Lalana ~ I was typing my response as you were posting yours. That's a wonderful idea too!

Has anyone done a book pan on top of a 12 x 18? I'm wondering how that would look.

yes I really like lalana's idea, you could incorporate all the same things that you're thinking onto something like that.

Oh, I do like having the Bible book pan as a foundation and the world on top. What a lot of object lessons in that. I din't know there was an open book pan. I will have to invest in one.

I have. Looks good and I put a scripture around the book cake along the top edge of the cake. It really looks good like that. Unfortunately don't have a pic in my gallery.

Thanks everyone! Beth ~ that's a pretty cake. What are the sparkly things?

I just got of the phone with the customer (actually she's a really good friend) and I mentioned all these options. She quickly ruled out the 3-D globe because she will be traveling 3 1/2 hours with it. I can't blame her for that. I freaked out traveling 20 minutes with my "ball and chain" cake. But she likes the book idea and the footprints and the verse to go along with it. Oh and the globe and people. So that sounds like a winner. I should be able to post the pic sometime Saturday. Thanks again!

Sparkley things are edible glitter that just caught the light. Also the FIRST part of the scripture...I once was young (baby pic) and now am old (current pic) were written in silver luster dust over the pictures. That MAY be some of the sparkley you are seeing!

GOOD LUCK!

Okay everyone ~ it's done. Here's the link to the pic http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&pos=-434953

Thank you everyone for all of your GREAT & HELPFUL ideas! You all immediately helped me feel good about doing this when you posted all your inspiring ideas. I wanted to add people around a globe on the Bible but I changed at the last minute and decided to make the sheetcake to resemble a globe and just put the footprints on the Bible with the verse.

The verse is a bit hard to read on the picture but it says, "And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!' Romans 10:15"

I wanted to make the edges of the pages gold like many Bibles have but it was hard to paint luster dust on buttercream without the right kind of extract. Oh well, it seems to give it a more antiqued look (maybe icon_rolleyes.gif ).

You did a GREAT job! May I use this idea sometime? We have a girl in our church that is an AIMER (Associate In Missions) who goes to Africa frequently. This would be PERFECT for her!

Absolutely Beth thumbs_up.gif . First of all, it's a CC community project (since I received so much great help here) icon_biggrin.gif . Second, even if it was all my idea I would still love for you to use it. Missionaries don't do the Lord's work for credit but it sure is nice to honor and recognize them for it. thumbs_up.gif
