I was SO excited to make a pirouette/pirouline cookie cake for my MIL - had ideas running around in my head to try the chocolote syrup BC and I was going to try ribbon fondant roses for decoration, etc. Then I bought some of the off brand kind at Walgreen's yesterday (for only $1 a can! granted, was a small can but great price!).

Then I happened to read on the back that they "may contain traces of hazelnuts". Oh no! My MIL has a slight nut allergy - nothing life threatening and for some reason she can have peanuts and almonds but other things like walnuts and pecans make her wheeze. So, I am obviously not going to make this cake for her (bummer...but gears are already churning to come up with another idea) but unless I had glanced at the back, I never would have thought about a nut allergy being a problem with these non-nut cookies.

Has anyone ever run into this issue with these cookies before? or has it ever been a problem?

Nuts are found in a lot of things. Products can come off the same line as a line that produces a nut product. I have clients who have a legume and tree nut allergy. Which also includes no soy.
Soy is is everything from Veg oil to chocolate chips.
