My son's birthday is this Friday, he will be 17. I am in Wilton course 3 and we have to do our final cake on next Monday. I talked my son into waiting until then for his cake. Problem is we have to do flowers for our final cake, I did not relize this. How do I make flowers look manly. I have some neon color fondant that I bought, and thought of roses, but not sure this is very manly. Help, I may just have to make another cake, not that I mind, but we don't even eat part of the cakes I make now, and if I make on monday I don't work until the next thursday and what do I do with it. Ok 2 questions then, 1. can i make flowers look manly, and 2 How do I save a cake made on monday until thursday night when I go to work. thanks shana

im thinking no on the flowers. just asked DH, and he agreed. 17 yo boys are really not gonna be happy with a flowery cake. why can't you leave them off? i mean, its not like they're gonna kick you outta the class, or fail you or something! lol. my attitude is that the wilton courses are my courses for me to do what i want with the cake. just make sure you know how to make flowers for future use, and make the cake ANY way you want! i never made a cake out of the wilton book, cause i thought htey were lame. when i read that people have to do a certain cake for wilton, even if they wanted to be original i think just do it anyway.

another option, make a small cake just for him, designed however he wants it, then use the wilton cake for backup servings.

(you might also want to nix the pillars for a 17 yo boy b-day cake. those seem pretty girly to me to)

You know, I tried to think of a way to save you with keeping the flowers...but I agree, 17 and flowers...nah. And it really isn't required that you have to have all of those flowers on your final cake. My final cake had royal icing flowers and I just took them off when I got home and I did something else. Saved those flowers for another occasion.
Now, saving the cake. If you want, you could freeze it. When preparing for a wedding that's what some decorators do. There's no way certain cakes can be prepared within a day or two. Key word, certain cakes. Some may argue this point. And honestly, when I worked for a local grocery store, they had cakes that were prepared and frozen for a month in the display case, then those that had a week of shelf life. (Beware of those cakes too...some people are lazy and only change the date and not the cake). And don't forget the practice of saving the cake for the 1st anniversary. Hey, that's only if you feel like freezing it. icon_biggrin.gif

My opinion: No flowers on your son's bday cake.
Make another cake for him to have on his actual bday even if its a small one.

My son turned 16 last year and got a new computer for his bday. For his cake I made a fbct of the HP symbol because he got a new HP computer. You can see the cake in my photos. A previous year, I did a pizza cake which is his favorite food.

Decorate your son's cake based on his hobbies/likes such as sports, music, cars, etc.

Hope this helps.

Here's what I'm thinking....do the cake in brown/chocolate fondant and add blue stripes to it. On the top teir have the stripes all meet in the middle of the top and just place one big chocolate rose to cover up the seams where they all meet. If you MUST do flowers on the cake, then do them in chocolate (alteast that's a little more masculine). When I did my course 3 cake they also made us do swag work....do them in buttercream and scrape them off later if you want to. Or do fondant swags and just detach them after the class!!

Good luck!

Ok, so I have decide to do seperate cake, My son wanted strawberry cake and so thats what I will do. I was thinking of making a pair of handcuffs out of color flow. and put the caption "one year left". He is going into law enforcement, and thought it would be cute. I think I will do a choc. cake with choc fondant and then neon roses for my classess. I have all this fondant left over from what I alreadyhad bought. I will just freeze the cake until the weekend when I work. thanks for the ideas and saving my son from his mother embarrasing him. I mentioned it to him about flowers on his cake and he said "whatever". I think he truly wouldn't care it is only for us anyway, but aleast when I am showing pictures of him blowing candles to everyone there won't be flowers in it. thanks shana
