So, I decided to make a cake tonight cuz DH wanted a cake after all his friends asked about my food icon_biggrin.gif. Good idea right? NOT! I extended a white cake recipe and was mixing it and my BRAND NEW Cooks hand mixer from JCPenney just QUIT WORKING! I turned it off a minute to grab something, and it wouldn't turn back on again....thank goodness my MIL had bought me a backup hand mixer for $8 at KMart. By the way, this is the 3rd hand mixer this year that has quit on me. My sister said I have to not use them 24 hours a day....silly girl. So I proceeded to put the cake in the oven and started making the chocolate cream filling. Pull the whipping cream out of fridge-----frozen solid. Have to wait till it thaws, no big deal, so I freeze the bowl and beaters, forgetting I had buttercream transfers in the freezer of course. Get cake out of oven, put on cooling rack. Get melted chocolate out of microwave (left the spoon in). Pull the bowl out for the cream filling, lost another FBCT to the floor, smashed it all up. Almost broke my wine glass screaming at the OTHER mixer, the $8 one got too hot to mix the cream (that thawed enough to get 1 cup out of) so I had to stop and start over 5 mins later. It's 10:00pm now. I finally finished the filling when I realized the BC was in the freezer as well. I give up, I'm going to bed and gonna decorate tomorrow..........

.... and if your like me and my luck, if you didn't have to make the cake and it was for fun, etc., none of this would have happened! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_lol.gif

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I have the Cooks stand mixer from JCP and absolutely love it. I really wanted the KA, but it was a little pricey since this is just a hobby for me. I have an old GE I use as well, but I can honestly say for quick cakes, I bring out the old hand mixer!!!!!

Hopefully, it will work out well for you tomorrow.

Time for a Kitchen Aid! Don't waste anymore money on mixers you are just going to burn out!

Sorry you had such a bad time...one day, a long, long time from now, you may actually laugh about it!

WELL, cake mix extender made the cake hard as a rock on the outside (I got it on here too icon_sad.gif...), no crumb coat required. It frosted well, and the filling was great, and I decorated it just for the heck of it. I just had a taste, and the corners are hard to cut into, but it tastes GOOD! I won't use that recipe anymore, I think I'm better off making my own from now on......
Here's the pic....the basketweave is ALL jacked up, my niece wouldn't keep her little fingers out of it, but since we are eating it, no big deal icon_smile.gif

AND My sister let me use her stand mixer for a while!!!!! I GOTTA GET ONE!

To soften hard edges, you should wrap the cake in seran wrap while it's still hot. It also helps to bake at a lower temperature.

I found my beloved Kitchenaid on sale at Walmart one day for $70. I know, crazy, huh? It works great, nothing is wrong with it, so just cruise by when youre there and perhaps you'll find a great deal. I would also try posting on craigslist or freecycle for your area. Perhaps someone has one in their cupboard collecting dust that they don't mind selling for cheap (or giving away!).

You must have been freaking out!
Do you have a Kohl's in your area? They often have sales on Kitchen Aids ... I know they're expensive ... but here's what you do: Wait until Kohl's advertises that you earn $10 for every $50 you spend on your Kohl's charage. then you'll be able to get free stuff the next week. Also, if you don't have a Kohl's charage ... Great! They always offer that you save and extra 10% on your purchase if you open a Kohl's charage that day! Ask your DH and children (if old enough) to give you money on mother's day to put towards the mixer.
If you don't have a nearby Kohl's, they often have discounts on shipping.

If you're a regular baker, then a KA is an investment in yourself.

KA=kitchenaid...hee hee...I am so new to this board and getting used to the lingo. I'm used to LOL, ROFL, BTW, but this cake text is funny. I read a post "You should use MMF." Say what?! huh? It just makes me smile when I figure out one, as I just did! icon_smile.gif TTYL!

I got my Kitchenaid just recently. I love it! I got it at the outlets and it is refurbished.

I was told that the largest number of the refurbished are something with flaws in the paint or something and there is nothing wrong with the mixer itself.
