UH, NOW would be good. Depends on the design, etc. You may have to order "stuff" for it and you may need to practice! If it were me, I'd tell him I needed to know a design by April 27th at the very LATEST and would need 1/2 of the cost for a deposit on that date!

Then again....I don't really charge for my wedding cakes, so this is just my suggestion! LOL

You need to know ASAP. Ask if they have a particular design in mind or a picture, if not, gather up some pictures or do some sketches then work on the cost after the design is figured out. Do they want round, square, a combination of both, etc.? Also find out if they want buttercream or fondant as the covering because that will make a difference in price as well.

well, i know they want buttercream (prolly never heard of fondant, except from me) I have spoken to them regarding pictures. I also gave them a BASE price (plain iced minimal flowers.. and specified it is a starting price)

You may also want to make sure that the venue there reception is at will accept a cake that is not from a licensed bakery. Expecially in california I am guessing they will be strict also.

Sorry I can't help with the timeline.
