i'd like to hear what everyone charges for half sheet cakes... my husband has a guy at work that wants me to make 2 for his kids... one is graduating from highschool and one from college... if i go by serving sizes he'll be forking out over $150 for 2 cakes and that just seems like a LOT to me... you can check out my quality of work in my photos and give me an opinion! thanks!

I charge $67 for a 12x18, BC with BC filling. You can suggest doing a combo cake for them since the them is the same. I also give a 15% discount for coworkers and good friends.

A 12x18 when cut into 2x2" squares yields 54 servings @ $1.50/serving = $81.00.

I just came across this posting and was wondering when you price by serving, what is a standard serving size?

I figured the number of servings based on a 2x2" serving, so the sheet cake is $81. If they cut it bigger, then they get fewer servings. My price list has a couple of illustrations for them:

12x18 - 2x2" pieces yields 54 servings
12x18 - 2x3" pieces yields 36 servings

The 54 servings works out to $1.50 a serving.
The 36 servings works out to $2.25 a serving.

It's only logical that if you buy a bigger piece of cake, then you are going to pay more for that piece of cake. I mean you could say, "$1.50 per piece" and the customer tells you "I'm going to cut a 12x18 into 4 pieces so here's my six bucks!" Obviously that's not going to happen, but I think you see the illustrative point.

I use the info from here, the Wilton serving charts and Earlene's chart and get a starting point.

thanks everyone! i think i'm going to go with $40 a piece... my hubby is finding out more details today to see exactly what he wants on it... if he wants a bunch of flowers made i might up the price a little but since he is a co-worker i think giving him a deal is important as well... he has also helped out my hubby many times with figuring out our hospital bills... now i just have to figure out some ideas... i HATE graduation cakes! they're just so boring! icon_lol.gif

I think $40 is reasonable-depending on your clientele and details wanted.

I charge $130 for a half sheet (3" tall feeding 50 by my count) and that includes buttercream icing, any flavors or fillings, and most decorations (GP would be extra for sure)

I charge $55 for double layer and $45 for single, simply decorated. Since he's a co-worker, I see why you would want to give him a discount....but I would definitely make that known to him. Otherwise, people at the party that sample your cake will come to you later expecting the same price.

i charge $40 for simple border and decorations. If they want chocolate transfer designs or something elaborate it gets to be more (i.e a wedding shower umbrella piped in stars that takes up 1/2 the top would be $10 more) hth

I just called my local grocery store bakery to ask them for a price quote (to help me ballpark a cake I have due).
They charge $14.99 for a quarter sheet, single layer, and $24.99 for a half sheet, single layer. $5 extra for a kit or icing image to be placed on top of it.

My grocery stores are about the same and that is why I charge $25 for an 11x15 and $30 for a 12x18. I know, I know, my cakes are way better and more personal; but that's the competition, and that's reality! I do an average of one to three cakes per weekend.
