I got this email from a friend

"I also need two cakes: one boy/kid cake, small, white (Happy Birthday Connor)for this Friday and one small chocolate man cake (Happy Birthday Mike) for this Saturday. Could you do them both and bring them Friday? "

Man cake meaning for an adult, not anything gross.

I told her I don't compete with Costco, I suggested she go to the grocery store since odds are that she doesn't want a custom cool looking cake, but just wants cake......... BUT if it turns out she does want something custom anyone have an idea for something that I can do that isn't too time consuming since this is short notice and I have other things this week already and can't spend a lot of time on this cake, but would be different than what you can get at the grocery store........

If you are looking at pictures and want to email me an ecard to [email protected] that would be awesome, or post a link here.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
Alice

Do you know what kind of stuff this man likes to do?
Most of the guys I know are into tractors, hunting, golf, fishing, mechanics, four wheeling, paintball, camping or dirt bikes so I have lots of ideas for them.
You could do a transfer of what he likes, either buttercream or chocolate that wouldn't be too hard, or make candy to decorate the cake with.

ummm I don't. His wife is an English teacher, but that is incredibly unhelpful. I guess I'm just thinking of something that isn't girly, and is unique but not over the top in terms of hours to complete....

If you have a lot to do you shouldn't take on too much. If you don't feel comfortable about the time frame you should just say "no".

If you just want to do a basic cake then pick a couple of colors and make a simple design. Like Brown and Blue are good colors. Not girly but you could do blue backround with brown writing and flowers.

Good luck!

Are the cakes for the same party?
I'd do a small shirt for the boy, and a larger shirt for the man. I don't have a pic- but know there are tons in the galleries. Or a baseball/football shirt for the boy-local school team, an for the man do a pro team shirt.

I have a simple brown/blue birthday cake in my gallery that I made for my FIL. It isn't too fancy - I stuck to simple bead borders and some stripes on the sides. Didn't get fancy with figures or flowers, etc but it did look like a "man" cake.

Anything with a lazy boy, tv, or bar-b-que grill on it!

After perusing the first 58 pages of birthday photos and not seeing anything that wasn't too girly or beyond my scope I asked the lady what her son and husband are into. I didn't want to do a hobby cake. I wanted to just do a cool technique that wasn't too girly, but after not having an epiphany found out the son has a gecko and the dad is into guns. So cake 1 will be covered in a grass tip and I will make a fondant log with a gecko on it and some bugs and things. Cake 2 will be basically the same except I am going to make a fondant shotgun to lean up against the log. I'm also making a piping gel lake and maybe a guy sitting on the log fishing. Then I am making no fail sugar cookies and using mini cookie cutters to cut out the happy birthday and covering with MMF. I'll post a picture!

Thank you for the suggestions, they were good ones.
